The newspaper says it is seeking alternatives to its antiquated production systems so it can produce the paper more efficiently. The company is in preliminary discussions with Dow Jones & Co. about outsourcing printing operations from Boston to a Dow Jones-owned press in Chicopee, MA, located in the western part of the state. Plans would have to be taken to the union representing Herald press workers before any outsourcing could take place.
The Bancroft family, which controls Dow Jones, is considering a $5 billion takeover bid from Rupert Murdoch and his media company, News Corp. Murdoch has talked about eliminating the printed edition of the Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones' crown jewel (e-GAM 7/2/07) Murdoch is the former owner of the Herald; he sold the paper in 1994.
