Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and its unionized nurses have reached an agreement allowing a new inpatient psychiatric unit to open Tuesday.
The medical center and Pinnacle Health System formed a new company to own and manage the 74-bed facility.
The Service Employees International Union had sought a court injunction to block the April 1 opening of the nonunion facility. The union represents nurses at the medical center and argued that their contract terms must apply to the new unit.
The union and Hershey have agreed to try to resolve the issue as part of a contract that will cover all nurses at the medical center. The union says if that fails, the two sides will enter binding arbitration to be completed no later than the end of next month.
