I need to find records for my grandfather. He was in the military
in El Salvador. I have no idea how to do that.

I'm looking for material on his involvement in La Matanza in 1932 and I'm afraid the government, let alone my relatives still in El Salvador, won't be very helpful as the powerful don't like to be reminded how much blood they had to spill to put down an uprising of poor people that year. My relatives there are right wing wackjobs that I love but can't talk to for more than two minutes without feeling nauseous.

But, I'm thinking that there may be an archive somewhere of his military records? He was involved in a tribunal -- there might be records of that somewhere? Maybe I should start with the main newspaper?

1. Try El Salvador ARMY
I wouldn't recommend it if he was a very high profile official but if he was just "one of soldiers" I would try to contact their ARMY for information. My $0.02. :hide:

3. He became the Minister of Defense eventually. I wouldn't even
know where to start with them -- but maybe I could pose as a high school kid writing a social studies report? :)

2. Hard one. Here in the USA I would recommend contacting
the VA. I don't know if El Salvador has something similar.

4. That's an excellent question. I have lots of relatives here and some
there. But, we're all so busy, we hardly see each other any more.

Not like the old days. :(
