John Edwards told listeners on the WNYC Brian Lehrer Show that he would no vote for FISA.

Edwards, stated, "I do not believe the telecoms should get immunity for illegal acts. So, I would not vote for it."

In January 2008, Edwards issued a similiar statement against retroactive immunity for the telecoms:

"In Washington today, telecom lobbyists have launched a full-court press to win retroactive immunity for their illegal eavesdropping on American citizens. Granting retroactive immunity will let corporate law-breakers off the hook and hamstring efforts to learn the truth about Bush's illegal spying program.

"It's time for Senate Democrats to show a little backbone and stand up to George W. Bush and the corporate lobbyists. They should do everything in their power -- including joining Senator Dodd's efforts to filibuster this legislation -- to stop retroactive immunity. The Constitution should not be for sale at any price." http://www.johnedwards.com/news/headlines/20080124-fisa/

2. That's great. Unfortunately, he'll never have the opportunity to put those words to the test.
He did, after all, vote to send us into war in Iraq. As did Clinton.

11. You're Avoiding the Issue
Once again, the Dems caved to the special interests and the Republicans...

We must hold all their feet to the fire--including Obama's...No excuses...

Dems have to lead by example...We can't say we're better than the Republicans just because we are Democrats...

Actions speak louder than words...

12. Hooray for Edwards!
Edwards continues to demonstrate his leadership and service to his country...When asked how he would have voted on the FISA bill, he tells the truth.

Obama and all the other Dems who caved today need to take a lesson from John Edwards.

Dems have to quit being the "Me Too Party."

5. Edwards' statement doesn't do much for democrats this cycle
It just sounds like self promotion to me. It certainly isn't being made to help people in our party for November.

6. Self promotion? Umm, no, he was asked about it
Edwards didn't bring up FISA, he was asked about it. Not sure if you are able to listen to the audio or not, but it's clear that he didn't bring it up.

Lehrer read a question from one of their listeners on this.

13. We Shouldn't Defend Our Own When They're Wrong
Congressional Dems like Senator Obama, who voted to approve Bush's FISA Compromise are wrong...There is no defending that.

Edwards did his best to cover for his party's nominee, but when asked how he would have voted, Edwards told the truth.

He should be commended for that, not criticized...We need more of that in our party...

Today's vote by many Dems not only granted telecom companies unprecedented immunity from prosecution for alleged unconstitutional acts, but the bill also expands Bush's powers to spy on Americans...

Little by little, our civil liberties are being ceded to an increasingly imperialistic president, with the help of our own party...

Shame on us!

10. As Ben Franklin would say...
Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor liberty to purchase power.

That's my message for the 69 senators who voted against the Constitution. Thank you, John Edwards for having some spine.

18. Lawyer's Point Here - Edwards does NOT say he would vote AGAINST it.
He says he would "not vote for it".

IE- He would not cast a vote.

Edwards, seasoned trial lawyer, knows exactly how important language and word choice are.
