1. I thank you for the warning, re: graphic content.
Unfortunately, the "hide thread" option does not prevent the very graphic still picture from being shown in the right column from the page I usually use to keep up w/ new DU threads http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/

I know this is not your fault, and likely nobody ever thought of this before.

3. Townspeople around the death camps in Germany were forced
to see what their government had done. They didn't think it was real
until they saw it.

12. I understand what you are saying, but that has nothing to do with what I am saying.

p.s. the "hide thread" function is working for this for me now (unless I deliberately seek out the thread by hitting the back button)

13. So you think this is not news worthy and offends your sensitivities?
I don't get what your point is?

7. The troops were just following orders
And I believe 99% of our troops in Iraq are NOT sadists like the ones in these pictures.

If and when this war ends and our troops come home, it will be because of the troops brave enough to speak out, like the ones who took these pictures. So no, I don't think we should condemn ALL the troops.

14. "I was just following orders"
That was an Epic Fail at Nuremburg, too. Just like here.

15. And just imagine what could have happened
if those soldiers had spoken up like the ones in Iraq have.

16. Um, did they not actually come back and make a documentary...?
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I do believe there is one out there featuring a number of the soldiers who carried out the abuse.

4. I am horrified
but sadly not surprised. This corrupt maladministration thrives on this kind of cruelty. It seems they must have been seeking out people who had no problem doing these kinds of things. They had a special place for them to serve.

5. K&R -- yes very graphic -- as was the actual torture condoned by the Bush Admin.
This video may not be suitable for viewing by Republicans. By not holding Cheney & Rumsfeld accountable, they can no longer claim to really "support our troops." But since so few Republican legislators (and pundits)have served in the military, they may not realize that condoning this type of behavior toward our detainees puts our own troops in danger of receiving such treatment.

The Geneva Conventions the Bush-Cheney-Rumsfeld administration stomped upon, have been a real solid way to "support our troops," by protecting them from cruel and inhumane treatment. More Democratic legislators have served in the military, so they know that if you condone this type of criminal behavior, you are putting your own troops at risk of similar treatment.

6. I've seen the photos now. Thank you for posting.
It's not something I enjoyed seeing, but it is something I had a right to see and even, as a citizen, a duty to view.

8. SUPPORT OUR TROOPS
Give them orders to torture detainees and then make them take the fall for the abuses when obscene pictures get leaked to the public.

"A few bad apples" my ass!

I would not be surprised if Condi or Rummy or GWB or Addington or Cheney or Feith or any of these evil pricks masturbated over their sadistic torture orders.

10. Someone needs to take all those photos, synch them to the song "Jesus Loves Me"...
... and put them on YouTube.

And then let the father of the kid who sang the song go apeshit all over again like he did when Eva used it.

11. The first two things that come to my mind are;
1. We have no leg to stand on now when and if American detainees are abused like this by our 'enemies'.

2. It's Bush's fault as well as the 'high ranking officials' for making these idiot soldiers, and the many of the American people, believe Iraq was responsible for what happened on September 11th.

They worked these right wing moron solders up into a rage (didn't take much though) to believe these prisoners were a threat to the American people and then left them alone with them.

Bush and Co need to be put on trial.

I think now I'll go back to the Lounge.

20. The "enemy" is not even taking complete advantage of the P.R. coup we Bush handed them.
Strictly speaking from a Public Relations standpoint of what would be an effective strategy for them, They SHOULD be releasing their OWN videos of OUR people being tortured in the exact same ways.

Step 1: Former detainee testifies before the camera about their torture in U.S. hands.
Step 2: Photos of others being tortured by CIA put in front of camera.
Step 3: U.S. hostage prisoner brought in and forced to read a statement describing how the U.S. has committed said variety of torture.
Step 4: U.S. hostage / prisoner is tortured in front of a backdrop of photos of victims of same method of torture at hands of CIA. \
Step 5: U.S. hostage / prisoner is tortured into confessing both real and imaginary crimes, ranging from the likely to the ridiculous.

The targeted audience would be the American people and their lawmakers.

The messages to be communicated would be:

a) We are doing this to YOUR people because YOU are doing it to others
b) These techniques are being used on both the innocent and the guilty alike.
c) Information gained by these techniques is unreliable.
d) These techniques radicalize those who are victimized by them and even those who learn about them.
e) These techniques are brutal, inhumane and illegal.

The desired result would be to create an outrage at home in the United States that would:

A) Create changes in policy that would stop these illegal acts.
B) Create an outrage that would hold those responsible to account.

However, seeing our own people tortured would also create outrage against the groups who are torturing them, regardless of their motivations. But considering that we're already trying to kill them anyway, their upside would be much greater than their downside.

I do not know why people sophisticated enough to create elaborate improvised explosive devices that are kicking our asses don't even have access to someone who has ever taken a Public Relations class or two. It's probably cheaper than flight school.

If their P.R. were more effective, we would actually ALL get what we want a lot sooner and the conflicts would end more peacefully.

Right now, all most Americans know is that we've got an "angry goose" on our back porch that keeps blowing people up, and most people stupidly think "they hate us for our freedoms."

But no.

They hate us for our policies.

Some of those polices should rightfully be changed.

And some of those leaders complicit in those policies-- Bush, Cheney, Pelosi, Rice, Fieth, Rove, Yoo, and others need to find their asses in jail.
