Hooked: Campaigner draws a crowd in protest against killing sharks...
Alice Newstead hung for 15 minutes from the de-barbed hooks to campaign against the practice of killing sharks to make soup from their fins. She performed the stunt at Lush Cosmetics in Regent Street, London, where she was watched through the window by passers-by. The company's campaign is backed by the wildlife conservation charity, Sea Shepherds.
A Lush spokesman said: 'We're trying to change people's perceptions about sharks as a lot of people still associate them with Jaws. 'There was only one person killed by a shark attack in 2007, and yet we killed 100 million for their fins last year, so we're clearly a bigger threat to them than they are to us. 'Fins are the most lucrative part of the shark, which explains the massive escalation in the numbers of sharks killed in the last few years.'
The stunt aimed to show what happens to the animals when they are caught. Campaigners say they are pulled from the water, their fins are sliced off and they are kicked back into the ocean. They then sink to the bottom and suffer a slow death. Lush said it is passionate about animal welfare issues, but its campaign does not specifically have anything to do with the products it sells.
It asked consumers to boycott restaurants that serve shark fin soup and not to use shark cartilage supplements, which are thought to improve bone health.
(I can imagine a day when there is an end to all mindless activity by humans, with education such as this).
