10. More about the original maverick
http://www.mysanantonio.com/opinion/Any_San_Antonian_can_tell_you_McCain_is_hardly_The_Original_Maverick.html

And the real Maverick family were and are very liberal Democrats, not Republicans. Maury Maverick Jr must be turning over in his grave.

13. A little more about Maury Maverick Jr
There is a reason I have a picture of Maury Maverick Jr. on my desk. One of the reasons I am a liberal is because of Maury Maverick, Jr. I grew up with his newspaper columns which spoke out against wrongs and championed the underdog. His father was a founding member of the local ACLU. During the 1960s, Maury represented poor kids who were drafted and seeking conscientious objector status or out of the draft. He did much of this pro bono. He like to joke that his Republican wife, whose family had money from oil, paid the bills during this time. His entire career was concerned with representing the disadvantaged, whether it was civil rights, personal rights, or war-related. Maury had no children, but he had people he mentored. He called them regularly and guided them and kept them focused. Jan Jarboe Russell, the author of that piece, and Cary Clack, also a columnist for our local newspaper as well as his nephew who was an attorney, and, of course, the current ACLU lawyer of some esteem, Gerry Goldstein, were four of the people he mentored, but who knows how many others there were. And how many like me that he influenced. He was also a supporter of the purple martin birds. He used to say he worshipped two magnificant trees in a park near his home, and for his funeral he had specified, "None of that churchy stuff." But I have a feeling that wherever he now resides, it is a place of peace and love and goodwill.

6. The original Maverick IS
James Garner. He has been a maverick in real life, too, often winning lawsuits when studios and networks pulled shenanigans to stiff him out of money he had coming. There ARE no substitutes.
