The fact that GM has a much larger retiree pool to provide for is what skews the numbers. If we had some form of universal healthcare in this country they wouldn't have to shoulder the entire burden. (And, in fact, GM and the UAW over a year ago agreed on a fair resolution of retiree healthcare, so that argument is a non-starter anyway.)

The mayor was absolutely correct to point out that Wall Street has gotten billions with no strings attached, while demanding that the auto auto workers give up the wages, pensions and health insurance that they worked damn hard to get. 40. My father is my hero

He worked for Detroit Diesel. Which I believe was owned by GM most of my life and then by Penske. He worked there for thirty-one and a half years. Many of those years he worked between 8-12 hours and when he could, he worked weekends.

From what I've heard, it was a very hot job, full of long hours doing a long boring job. (He never called it boring but I can only imagine how it must have been) He never complained. He worked hard for the healthcare he has now. He worked hard, worked his life away for that monthly paycheck he receives.

I've also heard over the years about some of the accidents that had happened. People losing various body parts. Those factories are a dangerous place to work no matter how safe the companies and the workers try to make it. I'm glad my father retired with nothing more serious than carpal tunnel syndrome.

Watching the mayor of Lansing defend the autoworkers makes me proud that he's in my home state. It's nice to see someone is looking out for the people like my father.
