Before entering into a discussion about whether or not the President should have spent 30 minutes filling out a bracket with ESPN’s Andy Katz, please consider the following passage:

Coach K is a longtime Republican donor who made waves when he hosted a 2002 fundraiser for North Carolina senatorial candidate Elizabeth Dole at the university-owned Washington Duke Inn. His group, to the consternation of many non-Republican faculty and students, was called “Blue Devils for Dole.”

Now, feel free to use your analytical skills to decipher Coach K’s shit-stirring quote:

“Somebody said that we’re not in President Obama’s Final Four, and as much as I respect what he’s doing, really, the economy is something that he should focus on, probably more than the brackets.”

Now if you watch the video, Coach K offers that rat-like smirk he’s famous for, which kind of makes us wonder if he was half-joking. But knowing his Republican background, we’re going to guess not.

2. Oh come on, that was cute. Yeah, there's a little bitterness, but he was gracious
and he was clearly defending his team, not knocking Obama. He said he loves him and supports him, and even corrected himself to say "President Obama" instead of "Obama." You can't ask for more from someone you know didn't support him in the first place.

3. So let me get this straight you tool...
First you say how great it is that lots of people are filling out brackets and that it is good for the sport, but then you say Obama shouldn't be doing this because he has more important things to be doing.

First of all, unlike Shrub, he can walk and chew gum at the same time.
Second, I am sure he is not foresaking his duties as President by filling out this bracket, he needs to ask where Shrub was during the TWO PLUS YEARS OUT OF EIGHT that he was on vacation or away from the White House.
Finally, how is that investment in Senator Dole going these days?

4. (Dons flame-retardant suit)
I don't care if Coach K is a Republican. He's entitled to his opinion.

Over the years, Duke hoopers have graduated at a high rate. Coach K is no small part of the reason. He cares about his players and their future. That deserves our respect.

So, every year at this time, Duke is my sentimental favorite to take it all.

Fire away!!

11. a perfect time to say "no comment"
most are correct, Coach K's record is something one cannot argue with...he is one of the best coaches at one of the best college basketball campuses (which he built). And his political views are personal as are ours (until we do something "unprofessional")....but does it surprise anyone that a West Point grad is a republican?

But really this was a perfect time for a coach or player to answer with "no comment"...or something "light hearted" like, "hey its great for the game." It will be interesting to see if and how Roy Williams will handle a similar question. You might recall Candidate Obama had the pleasure to meet with the current UNC team while on campaign trail. In fact I believe Obama even got to scrimmage with the boys in Chapel Hill.

I'll admit - I wear Tar-Heel Blue.

13. Shouldn't coach K be more worried about coaching his team...
Edited on Thu Mar-19-09 02:16 PM by GrimReefa
And less worried about making political commentaries?

BTW, I have Duke in the Final Four.

14. coach k retirement not far away ................
A few years ago, coach k was ready to kick back and let someone else do the job.
But the Duke faithful came to the rescue - big time. Kind of a bailout with bonuses - on steroids.

coach k lives pretty high on the hog now, has for some time, what with income of several million dollars a year. But that ain't nothing compared to what awaits him when he retires.

I have heard on the day coach k retires, he will have a net worth of approx.
45 million dollars, and counting. Not bad, huh?

Not there is anything wrong with that.

And just for the record, if VA is not in it, I dream of a Duke/UNC NCAA final, at which time I will choose which side I am on.

Coach K is a good, honorable man and a helluva basketball coach. It's his
politics that are screwed up. Just sayin' .................

then Coach K should be focused on basketball and not politics.
