24. The most critical part of public speaking is honesty ....
The most critical part of public speaking is honesty - how can we expect people to be honest when they are torn down for innocent comments like this, that are intended to be self-deprecating, not insulting to anybody else?

27. at least...
He was the absolute first person to say it was wrong, and to apologize. After eight years of President "Wasn't My Bad" Bush, it's nice to see our President take responsibility for a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes.

4. I just saw it while watching the show. It is actually not anything like what the
detractors were describing. It appeared to me that President Obama was not saying he bowled like someone who should be in the special Olympics. He was reacting to Jay Leno's comment about how the President's bowling score was really good....I believe he felt that Leno was being supportive to someone who really was not good at something, but was trying, and deserved some credit.

It did not have anything to do with his opinion of his own bowling, but the kindly reaction he got from Jay Leno.

7. I Swear To God I'll Be Pissed If He Does That
He ought ignore the whole damn thing and pretend like the asshats in the media are completely batshit crazy for focusing on it.

In fact I bet you that's what he'll do.

6. OMG - HORRIBLE- HE'S A MONSTER!!

okay cap-sarcasm

I'm sure it'll still be wielded against him by the right - we'll see how it translates in 'news reports' - remember the Janet Jackson superbowl incident wasn't defined by the milli-second it was on the air... it was the re-hash and repeat and repeat that made it seem like a 5 hour nipple concert LOL

9. From Politico dot com
After President Barack Obama said on the Jay Leno show that his bad bowling looked "like Special Olympics or something," the White House quickly issues a statement: "The President made an offhand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics. He thinks that the Special Olympics are a wonderful program that gives an opportunity to shine to people with disabilities from around the world," spokesman Bill Burton said.

13. Well, to be the first dissenter...
I don't think this should be a big media deal, but I know it will because everything anyone says in the US has to be "denounced and rejected" by someone somewhere...

Having said that, I would not ever say something like that myself. It is not a classy thing to say and I don't appreciate him saying it.

15. The crowd probably never even heard what he said
Edited on Fri Mar-20-09 12:31 AM by npk
Because Leno sort of talked right over the comment. I mean it's not like the crowd started booing. Hell Leno didn't even seem to pick up on it. I agree it's not much of a gaffe IMO. Of course I am sure Hanity will devote a full hour to it tomorrow night. He'll probably shamelessly trot out some organizer from the special Olympics that will pretend to be all outraged. Like Hanity would give two shits about the special Olympics. To me I think if any pundit tried to make this a story it will backfire on them.

17. Jay's reaction to Obama's score is how people react to those who compete in the Special Olympics
Dumb joke by Obama. The good news is as a nation we can afford to give this a lot of attention because the country is in such ghood shape with any real problems thanks to W. Bush's polices during the last 8 years. /sarc

23. I am usually willing to cut most folks some slack on these type of "gaffes".
It is obvious that he did not mean anything by it, but it will get attention, nonetheless. By the same token, if GWB had said it, most of us here would be outraged and calling for his head. It depends on whose ox is being gored. Let's all chill. Life is too short to spend it pissed off.
