So Michelle Malkin and others are trying to make hay about Obama bowing before the Saudi King (0:54 in the video above).
http://michellemalkin.com/2009/04/02/video-obamas-deep-bow-to-the-saudi-king/

Seriously, can we move beyond this bullshit protocol nitpicking and start talking about some serious issues here? I don't care if Michelle gooses Queen Elizabeth or if Obama gives an FBI t-shirt and some postcards to the next foreign leader. The only reason the Republican media is talking about ANY of this is because they can't argue with our sides' superior/correct positions on the major issues of the day. There is nothing wrong with being kind or deferential to the obviously older King of Saudi Arabia. It's just being nice, and it's time for conservatives to lighten up and start debating real issues rather than this manufactured protocol crap.

3. Aw, they're so cute ...........
Little impotent anklebiters, with nothing of substance to gnaw on, they're just down there in their own waste, trying to sink their decaying little fangs into the ankles of someone who doesn't even notice that they're there.

Nor does he care.

They're trash, so they're behaving like trash.

Our PRESIDENT AND MRS. OBAMA are driving them insane.

I love it.

Pass the popcorn...................

I work in a world-population environment. I bow to people every day. People bow to me. Maybe they're wife-beaters or Pol Pot supporters. Maybe they've got decaying corpses hanging in their basement and they roll around naked in the liquefied tissue dripping off. So the fuck what? It's manners and respect that's appropriate to the occasion. Yay Obama!

18. Context is everthing. I wouldn't characterize it as "deferential" . . .
I'd characterize it as "polite." And no, I have no problem with it.

I have problems with any number of aspects of Saudi society and governance that don't fit my notions of right and wrong, but these are totally unaffected by formal courtesies exchanged on camera in world summits.

Edited on Thu Apr-02-09 09:57 PM by JudyInTheHeartland
I think it sends an incredibly positive message to the Arab world. Here is an AMERICAN President giving the ultimate respect to one of their elder statesmen. It's a small thing, yes, but the more I think about this the more I think that we can really make a difference during the next 8 years.

24. It is the first time I have ever seen it done
It does not sit well with me. In Japan everyone bows so that is different from one leader bowing to another unless it is the Saudi common greeting to bow. I have no idea if that is so or not. The hand holding is cultural and I don't have a problem with that nor the kissing.

11. It's annoying but kind of fun to see them all freaked out.
For eight year they had their moronic leader, W, stinking up the entire world with his stupidity. Every time one of them tries to get any attention they make national laughing stocks out of themselves.

Every day that passes the Obamas make every republikan look smaller, sadder, duller and more inept.

Obama looked great and totally rocked the summit. As usual the pukes are left shaking their tiny fists.

26. Democrats screamed bloody murder over Reagan bowing to the Queen of England.
So I will reiterate OUR gripe about that. For a head of state to bow to another is a sign of surrender of power. A Head of state has no official duty to bow to another. Not even in the head of states homeland. It was indeed improper for Obama to bow to him. Some things in this world never change.

However Barack and Michelle did very well with their visit to Queen Elizabeth. It was easy to tell that her Majesty was quite impressed with them. Her Majesty chose to give them more of a family reception than a state reception. This had even some of the most avid royal watchers confused on protocol. But I assure you there were no breaches of protocol contrary to their claims. I think her Majesties reasoning behind this was to put aside some of the Bush/Blair strained relations to renew and reaffirm the relationship with cousins across the pond so to speak.

48. Reminding you of the past. Reagan went to the Queens Jubilee and bowed to her.
There was an outrage over that from the democrats. That outrage was further compounded upon their return. Nancy Reagan wanted to have Crowns made for the President and First Lady. George Washington nearly jumped up out of his grave and went on a dead run for her. Because if America is to have a royal family. Then that Royal family is George Washington's. He was offered the position as King of America and declined it to become our President.

June 14 1989- Receives honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II.

It was Nancy who refused to bow to The Queen.

No wonder you couldn't find any links...

And so if he bows, customarily, to a Japanese man, this is offensive? LOL - These pooooor GOP folks are slowly sinking into their own pit of quicksand and their struggling is only making them go under faster. Keep it up! It's only going to keep that last 25% of their supporters under their wing, not anyone new.

Gingrich is going to build a new 3rd Party and you are going to see these Right Wing nuts split the baby so that no one has the votes to overtake the Democrats! YEAH!!!!!!!!!! I love their stupidity

Of course Bush simply holds the King's hand.... (see vid).. like a school girl holding the hands of a would-be knight

56. It's liberalism
It is liberalism we have too worry about today. Accumulating power to the state has been the aim of liberalism over the past 50 years. It is accelerating under Obama because he truly believes that increased state control of society is good. Freedom and democracy are subservient to the good of the state. The state decides what is good instead of the individual. There will be federal controls exerted over web content like you find on this website. You may soon find that is no longer any opposition to your goal of increasing state control over the individual. That will be a clear sign that you have won - when the opposition is eliminated. Everyone will write the same content, subject to state approval. We will all be in harmony without any differences of opinion. A perfect state. That is the goal, isn't it?

and the rest of the goppers to rail on this. Their bullshit plans for America are based on anything they can spin on the president in a negative light. I didn't notice anyone else bowing but Obama is a humble man and I'm sure he felt at ease with respect to Abdullah, although a nod and a handshake would have sufficed as was with Elizabeth. Best to wait to see what his explanation is as I'm sure he'll be asked about it.
