1. actually, in earlier times, Christians also had laws against
usury. So the idea that bankers shouldn't get rich off borrowing money, that it should be an act of charity and goodwill, is not something that originated with Islam.

2. Well, I listened for several minutes. The sharia discussion must be at the end. A pity.
I don't have time to re-hear the same old discussions before getting to the subject of your post.

5. I loved the l-o-n-g pause
when the host threw the suggestion to the other panelists. I'm sure it must have been the satellite delay! :spray:

6. Shariah financing doesn't seem like the worst thing in the world to me;....
Edited on Sat Apr-04-09 04:36 PM by burning rain
it technically avoids interest, but replaces it with one or another legal fiction: all the same, the borrower ends up paying back the lender more than he got in the first place, so the lender does make his profit. It's one sort of a contract instead of another, and as long as it doesn't demand religious duties and isn't offered to Muslims only, I don't see any reason to object.

Absolutely, though, I do favor holding the line against other aspects of shariah. The separation of church and state had damn well better be accompanied by separation of mosque and state.

8. Shariah finance is rather different... for example, I have a VISA card with 0%
interest FOREVER...

Ummmm and you don't have to be Muslim to use it.
