1. He's guilty
and a prosecutor can flip him. The transcripts will be sanitized to provide official cover, but getting them to testify under oath might prove interesting as by the time answering questions under oath comes around they'll all have contracted Alzheimer's. A little water boarding might loosen their lips. Powell said he wasn't sure water boarding was torture. Maybe a first hand experience would convince him of what has been deemed torture by everyone but the Bush cartel.

5. Cenk is being generous here on two fronts...
Rachel is becoming a major force in the media because of her excellent interview skills. He is helping the return to real journalism by praising her and her skills in this regard. We need at least 50 more journalists just like her right now. Hopefully they are taking the cue that this may help their careers now if they take out and brush off those skills learned in school.

Secondly, we lost Powell several years ago. If he were ever the human we all hoped he was. He sold his soul somewhere along the line and we probably won't ever find out the truth when or why. He is a good soldier in the worst sense - he will follow his leader no matter what his personal moral compass says. He is guilty and though it makes me sad to say it - he deserves to sit on the same bench in the same trial as whistle ass and darth cheney. Reminds me very much of the tragedy of Albert Speer. If anyone is interested in Speer, a very good book is Spandau: the Secret Diaries. Interesting insight into the reasoning and regrets of a man caught by his own moral weakness.

Powell is a sad sad human being and I predict that history will always view him thru the lens of 'what could have been'.

8. Embraces him?
I think he treats him with respect as he treats most people. I think it says that Obama is respectful of the Rule of Law and that it will be our Congress and Courts that will try Powell... not the court of public opinion slanted by Obama's behavior.

7. school us
please elaborate on the story of Albert Speer?

I know he was an industrialist that helped build and run Hitler's War Production machine. Are you saying he was an innocent that just got dragged along by the Nazi's?

Thanks.

Goering is one of my favorite Nazi monsters. He had style. And he took over Boelka's flying squadron when Boelka (sp) died in a dogfight. Surviving WW1 in the role of a fighter pilot is a tremendous accomplishment in itself.

9. It's been a while since I read that book
but I read it twice a couple of decades ago so here goes. Speer was a very talented and highly creative architect. It was his idea to orchestrate one of the first Nazi rallies in 1933 using 'towers of light'. I think I found it fascinating as a cautionary tale of what someone who is extremely gifted and talented can get themselves into when they are hungry for fame and fortune and over-needy for recognition. He always maintained he knew nothing about the final solution - which is hard to believe as he was Hitler's Minister of Armaments as his last assignment. If you google him as I just did you will find a few different sites on his work and a mingling of admiration and regret at his fateful decision to pursue the wrong course.

10. A Missing Followup Question
Edited on Sun Apr-05-09 11:52 AM by Sander
"Mr. Powell - In any of the meetings that you attended as a principal and in which such things as waterboarding and other 'enhanced' techniques were discussed, do you NOW PERSONALLY believe that illegal activities were approved?"

He evaded Rachel's question and I think she could have pinned him down as to whether he personally NOW believes illegal activities were approved. Forget about future written records. Forget about whether he may have not been present at all the meetings. What is his current belief now in light of his recollections?

14. She's not brave, or courageous. She's just doing her job.
Something that can't be said about most 'journalists' in the mainstream media these days.

By the way, how is Powell the "least guilty" of the Bush administration? Has Cenk forgotten his charade before the UN Security Council?
