Pat Buchanan really doesn't like it much when his opponents pin him down on his religious hypocrisy. Lawrence O'Donnell, on Hardball today, was admittedly relentless in trying to get Buchanan to fess up to complaining about Barack Obama speaking at Notre Dame while he had no problem with George W. Bush being there.

As O'Donnell points out repeatedly, the Catholic Church is every bit as opposed to the death penalty as it is abortion. And yet Pat -- who is fine with the death penalty -- thinks it's an outrage that Obama, who is adamantly pro-choice, is speaking at Notre Dame. Finally, Buchanan gets fed up and tells O'Donnell: "If you will shut up I will."

Pat thinks this is his winning argument:

Buchanan: Every unborn child is totally innocent. And in the United States, everybody who goes to execution is guilt of murdering someone, of taking innocent blood.

8. The Catholic Church is not against the death penalty in all instances

The Catechism of the Catholic Church changed under JPII (maybe 12-13 years ago). I know this because I am a practicing Catholic and a former prosecutor. I stayed in my position as a prosecutor to handle a death penalty case (this was a little over 15 years ago). I consulted the Catechism then and concluded that it was acceptable for me to seek the death penalty in a case I prosecuted (a recently released convict stalked, raped and stabbed to death a neighbor). I saw the case through to the end, which resulted in my office deciding to drop our decision to seek the DP in favor of natural life in prison (the defendant had a long history of mental illness, i.e., Munchusen's in particular). The current status of the Catholic Catechism allows for the DP as a last resort, but stresses that the circumstances where it applies are "virtually non-existent."

O'Donnell makes a valid point. But the better point, IMHO, is that Bush should have been turned away from speaking at Notre Dame because of his violation of the Just War Doctrine.

Buchanan is an idiot. His take on the Catholic position about the DP is totally incorrect.
