I can't believe this poor Captain, surrounded by a contingent of armed US Forces, makes a valiant escape attempt, and no one is paying attention enough to even pick off the pirates as he is in the water. Was everyone asleep at the switch here? They have ONE job while they are all surrounding that boat and it is to monitor and intervene for his safety/escape. I think some heads are going to roll over this complete flub by the military when this is a 24-hour situation and they obviously did not have spotters through the night who could have helped. What on earth do these military highers-up do all day, sip coffee and wait for instructions? This is infuriating.

News reports say they have not heard from the Captain at all and that the Pirates fired into the water as he was trying to flee. The Pirates refuse to prove he is still alive but they reportedly dragged him back on board.

Oh man! You should see the responses to this story. They are all "Just kill the pirates...without a trial.....just blow them out of the water"... some with elaborate plans on how to do so....like this was a TV show. No concern for the hostages, just "kill 'em" revenge.

I guess Somalia is more of a threat than Saddam ever was. Why didn't we go in to stabilize the war torn dysfunctional African nation before we pulverized a tyrannical but stable government into "democracy". Why hasn't Somalia gotten more attention....considering where it's located.

Box cutters and pirates....throwing egg in the US's face while we spend billions on sharks with friggin' lasers on their heads.

what would you have done, open fire with one of the .50 cals? From at least several hundred yards away, in the dark, in rolling water, when the Captain almost surely never got more than 20 or 30 yards from the boat?

5. the military is losing focus on the symbolic nature of this situation - 100% attention is needed

I can guarantee you that if it was V.P Biden in that boat and he had managed to jump into the water, the pirates would have been mincemeat. The military highers-up are simply not putting their attention to this matter like they should - and yet they are all still at the scene, getting paid the same - the difference is that they aren't as concerned about who is in the boat. Do they have something better to do? THEY ARE THERE FOR A REASON!

Their lack of ability to react in the instance where the captain actually escaped entirely from the boat into the water shows the lack of focus on the mission. My guess is they had never even considered that the captain might be able to sneak out somehow - they are just sitting and waiting, twiddling their thumbs. That twiddling is quite clear given that the captain actually escaped from the boat entirely - was in the water - and yet the lifeboat remains, the pirates remain, and they managed to pull him back in.

An embarrassment to those leading this mission - a serious embarrassment.
