1. I have to wonder why she singles out Seth and not the writer and director
as well as Anna Ferris. I have zero intention of seeing the film and that scene sure doesn't change that an iota but I think more than just Seth Rogan is at fault here.

5. Ferris and the writer/director are both women.
Edited on Sun Apr-12-09 12:39 AM by GrimReefa
This rant falls into the worst stereotypes about feminism.

Seth gets singled out, as pointed out here, while the two women who are at least equally responsible for the scene are not even mentioned.

Also, the idea that guys who see this movie will think they have "permission" to copy the actions of Rogan's character, who is a rent-a-cop with a mental disorder who lives with his mom, is sexist.

You undermine everything else you say when you go off like this.

2. She started out so well
but the "Fuck you, Seht Rogan" isn't going to do her any good. I haven't yet seen the movie she's talking about, but I'll keep this youtube clip in mind when I do see Seth's movie.

4. I liked him in most his movies, especially Knocked Up.
Now wait for it, cause I'll probably be attacked for enjoying what many believe to be a pro-life movie.

I don't care if they're pro-life, as long as they're not anti-choice.

24. Knocked Up was one of the most sexist movies I ever saw.
yeah, now I'm gonna have to don the hazmat suit, but...

It seems that people, particularly men don't even notice that the movie is filled with a variety of men, goofy or idiosyncratic perhaps, but almost all of them likeable in some way. Funny, but not to be despised. (sorry, to single out men here, but that was my experience from my informal polls.)

In contrast, there was not one single positive female character in that film. Every female character was someone you, as an audience member, just couldn't stand. They were written to inspire dislike. Whiney, shallow, materialistic, non-nurturing, self-obsessed, or in the case of the female gyn Dr., really repulsive, ugly, as human as a troll living under a bridge.

None likeably weird, not funny, not anyone you'd want to hang out with. The female lead only became "likeable" after she gave up her life, career, personality in favor of grinning acceptance of her new role as an attachment to her new beau and a contented brood hen. With occasional stereotypical nagging girlfriend or self-doubting attacks on our likeable but beleaguered Hero, because she's such a hormonal mess, of course. Poor him!

Ugh, I just couldn't stand it. I hate that tired old cultural message which the film wholeheartedly reinforces, that there is only one acceptable role for women : adoring eyecandy sidekick to her man, endlessly amused by his colorful personality, lacking in personality or activities herself, no life outside of pregnancy issues. It's bizarre, the narrow framing of "femaleness" in the mass mind set!

(And, only gorgeous, knock-out women are acceptable to this frame of mind, btw--ALL other expressions of life as a female are disparaged, trivialized, hatefully mocked, examples of failure, deserving of hate/rejection. I mean, admit it, didn't you feel nothing but distaste for every other female character in the movie?)

9. (SPOILER) I saw the movie and I didn't see it that way.
(SPOILER) The director doesn't show the beginning of the sex. The viewer comes in in the middle of the sex scene, about 3-5 seconds before what the woman in the above video is talking about. At first, there's some wild audience laughter because Rogan's character is just goin' to town. Then your eye moves toward the woman's face and you notice she seems to be passed out, head toward the audience, with a big puddle of sick on the pillow right in front of her mouth. The director let's this go for a couple of seconds to let the audience go "OH GROSS!" Then Rogan's character looks up at her, notices that she seems to be passed out, and so he stops...because having sex with a girl who is passed out is WRONG! Get it? He thinks she's passed out, so he stops. I'm pretty sure that's what you're supposed to do.

But, surprise! The joke is that she's not really passed out, as evidenced by the line, "Why'd you stop, Motherfucker!?!"

So anyway, that's how I saw it.

10. 52% of the viewing audience...
Yeah, right, like women are one big monolithic entity that agrees completely with her. And FWIW, "Friday Feminist Fuck You" is about the stupidest way I can think of to get a message out there. The very title invites dismissal.

11. It's amazing and disappointing to me how feminism has become taboo among so-called liberals.
Just watch the reaction anytime a feminist speaks out here on DU. Anything else goes. Feminism is the last taboo.

22. LAST taboo?
"Feminism is the last taboo." - I'm going to go ahead and disagree with you there. The last taboo will probably be something like mutant teenagers with special powers, or humans marrying robots.

25. quite right. Look at how anyone saying there's a problem
with regard to how we envision women in this culture is immediate target practice material.

Even within this thread, the namecalling, kneejerk put downs, idiotic comparisons (ie, last taboo--pinheaded examples of even!! worser!! taboos!! just to show you dopey ladies how ridiculous you are, so why don't you whiney hags STFU).

I don't see the attacks on people who describe oppression or speak up on behalf of ANY other marginalized group here, but women who point out sexism entrenched in the culture are fair game for blatant contempt and pile-ons and personal attacks, just for the mere act of talking about specific examples of prejudice.

i mean, she does say in the movie that she couldnt stand the thought of having kids and waking up every morning having forgot everything that had happened(or the fear and fright from waking up pregnant with no knowledge of getting that way)...

yet they go on and have a baby anyway...

id imagine there are some questions of morality in that to be had.

regardless tho, its just a movie.

20. There's women being violently abused around the world and that feminist is worried about a movie?
No problem with feminism, but I wish some of them would talk more about the larger problems than some small-time BS like a comedy.

23. small time BS comedy reinforces the notion that rape is ok
It is important. And, feminists can point out the danger of movies that encourage violence as they help to stop violent abuse around the world...and

My guess is that date rape is violent to the victim. Or, are you suggesting that if the bones are not broken it is not rape?

26. a part of why women are victimized globally is the lack of respect for our humanity
Edited on Sun Apr-12-09 12:02 PM by BlancheSplanchnik
Envisioning women as not quite human, not as worthy of respect as men, leads to actions that manifest the belief.

If you want to see larger problems that confront women get talked about, you need to look at women-cenetered news, such as Women's E-news, www.womensenews.org There, you will see the plethora of opressions women still face, the news that other outlets, MSM and progressive alike, do not deem worthy of investigation.

Cultural portrayals of women are a part of a very big puzzle, because they affect beliefs about women and how we should be, how we should behave, how we work, how we get paid, how we are to be treated. And so, because sexist cliches are so rampant in mass media, it is important to point them out, to speak about them, to become aware of them, to think of women who don't fit the cultural ideas, to build an awareness that is as turned off by sexism as it is by racism.
