A top Shia cleric in Afghanistan has rejected criticism of a law that critics say legalises marital rape and limits the rights of Shia women.

Cleric Mohammad Asif Mohseni has tried to put an end to what he calls a "misunderstanding" over the law, which has been the subject of intense international debate for weeks.

In Kabul, Al Jazeera's Todd Baer reports Afghan scholars argue hundreds of Shia women also support the law.

1. Those women are brain washed since childhood what else are they gonna say.
The children belong to the men after 7 get real. I divorce you three times and they are divorced get real. They have to ask to leave home get real. Men ask for sex you must submit get real. Then again many evangelical women are brain washed into submission and abuse get real.

The religions of this world are controlled by men. A form of enslaving women by men. After all how would the ego of these man feel if a woman was equally as smart and capable..after all.

Then there was Lorena Bobbitt...that sounds good about now.

2. I'm sure they do support it
In much the same way if you point a gun to someone's head, they'll most likely spout whatever you want them to say.

What are these women gonna do?
They live in these cities, villages and towns.
They'd become targets of these fundie loons

3. Kicked.
How can this be going on if we are in control there? Is this what republican'ts were working for these past five years or so?

I would love to see them defend this. I hope someone has to guts to call them on it as well.

4. Does anyone know if it actually says all this in the Qur'an or is it a cultural issue?
There are so many things that have been made up in the name of Islam since Mohammed was around that it's difficult to work out what's actually a religious rule and what's a cultural tradition.

The Taliban used all the methods that a cult uses to keep everyone under their control in the 90s. For example, they banned music. Where in the Qur'an does it say you can't listen to music?

What about Mohammed's fear of dogs? Muslims have to wash their feet 7 times if they are licked by a dog because they are seen as 'evil'. I don't think "god" would have purposefully created an 'evil' creature. Personally, I have a feeling he got bitten by a dog as a child and this phobia got turned into a religious thing. I mean. come on. dogs. evil? They're man's best friend, ffs!
