5. Its great to hear the truth....
From our president instead of a bunch of lies about how "the fundamentals of our economy are strong"
a day before the bottom fell out...........

7. I agree...
I also like how he tried to explain to those who think he is simply in bed with the banks why he has to do what he is doing. He explained why doing nothing and letting the banks fall would make things much much worse. And he also explained why nationalizing banks would not work both for the economy and politically...He needs his political capital for Healthcare, energy & education. I hope many DUers watched this speech.

10. As one who is in the process of retiring much earlier than I had hoped,
I worry greatly when I hear vague talk about reforming Medicare an Social Security. Those of us who are now over 65 paid in -- extra -- more than our "share" -- over the years. We provided a high living standard for our parents and grandparents and children.

Now that we, for various reasons, can't work or can't get work anymore, younger Americans gleefully contemplate "reforming" Social Security and Medicare.

Most older people between 50 and 70 do not have pensions. We have our homes, our 401(K)s, what we have been able to save and Social Security. We were falsely led to believe that we had more money in our 401(K)s and houses, and that we could count on interest on savings and Social Security in our senior years. Social Security, I must add has been a reliable safety net for the elderly since the Depression. There was never any reason for us to think it would not be there for us when we needed it.

Now, Obama is threatening to pull the safety net of Social Security and Medicare from under us at the time in our lives when we are vulnerable and cannot compete for jobs or help ourselves. That is despicable.

Those who sold us out -- the bankers, the politicians who promote free trade and imports and who have ruined our economy, those who failed to invest in alternative energy in the 1980s and 1990s when it was obvious that such investments were necessary -- must answer to us.

Most Americans are not wealthy. Most Americans do not squander their money. Most Americans work very hard. The wealth and opportunity of America has been squandered by a few who robbed the rest of the country. Those who have stolen from the rest of us by undeservedly taking huge paychecks, bonuses and then placing their ill-gotten money in tax havens overseas, should be asked to shoulder the burden of providing for the elderly and disabled.

11. I don't think there's reason to 'fear.'
Edited on Wed Apr-15-09 05:25 AM by elleng
and I don't know where anyone gets the idea that President Obama 'is threatening to pull the safety net of Social Security and Medicare from under us,' unless its from some rep-types. ("Rep" here signifies both republican and reprehensible.)

There may be examination of the way some of their attributes work and are paid for, and thats a NUANCE we can pay attention to, but nothing I would characterize as 'despicable.' I'm 64, and retired.

Now, Obama is threatening to pull the safety net of Social Security and Medicare from under us...

What news report did I miss where Obama has said anything about cutting Social Security or Medicare?

13. Listen to the last of the YouTube tapes on Obama's economi
speech this week. Talk of reforming Social Security or Medicare is always bad news for older people, and that is what he talks about among other things.
