47. Lincoln was the first president to tax income. He wanted war funding.
"In 1862, in order to support the Civil War effort, Congress enacted the nation's first income tax law."

Now she also committed a cardinal sin...you never, ever get into a discussion with your audience. You let them speak...and then edit

That said, pretty enlightening

66. I got it worse than that in 91.
I was a TV reporter in Oregon when Gulf War was going on. I had to cover a protest which at first was only those against. Those supporting were on other side of street and starting coming over to get in face on people protesting against. I was trying to interview some dude against the war and some moron who supported had a sign and hit me in the head with it. Fortunately, 2 cops in riot gear saw whole thing and cuffed the dude in a NY minute. He looked at me after cop cuffed him and I just smiled.

My idea of an interview is ask a question..if they start lying..you stop them and state a fact that applies to the question you asked. The problem with the media in the last 8 years is they don't come armed with facts...they just ask questions and accept the answers as fact.

58. Generally, that's the best way to interview.
Under these circumstances (wild and crazy situation, loud; no comfortable chairs for a thoughtful conversation) I think she should have let him have his say, and when he'd finished, she might have tried to follow up to get him back on track.

It bothers me when interviewer gets agitated if interviewee doesn't take the conversation where she hoped it would go. That's life; make lemonade!

86. No, that is the worst way to interview
I am guessing that you are a reporter, which would make perfect sense. It seems like the new style of reporting is just to ask a question, then let the person say whatever they want and move on. We see interviews like that all the time and it is what is wrong with the media today (okay, one of the things wrong with it). Reporters like that (yourself, included) make it through their list of questions, complete the interview and usually accomplish the opposite of what the interview was supposed to be about, which is to get the person being interviewed to answer questions. Why do you think that in the rare cases when a reporter does actually ask a follow up question, the interview makes the headlines and becomes viral. It is because an interviewer is going against today's norm and doing the opposite of what you are suggesting.

87. To continue commenting on your backwards way of thinking
An environment like this is probably the worst type of environment to let somebody talk on ad nauseum and then try to follow up and get him on back on track once he is finished. In fact, the only way that you could do that is if you DID HAVE chairs for a thoughtful conversation so the two people could just sit and chat.

So, in short, you should try getting into the habit of taking everything that you are thinking....pause.... then completely reverse it right before you say it. If you do that, you will be amazed at how many people start saying... Wow, that was brilliant!

44. sadly, elleng, the problem is this moran was shouting immediately and not directly talking about
tax issues - he only wanted a chance to smart off about how he feeeeeeeels that Obama is a liar. She asked him how what he was saying applied to the tax issue, and the loonies just went off, and I rather loved the dig at the end of letting him bitch, that of course they were screaming at her the whole time uncivilly, which makes allowing him to go on with his BS a bit pointless b/c you're wasting air with anti-govt crap. I'm glad she at least asked what his point was.

She may have understood his point. The moron didn't make it well, but here is the Lincoln quote he was looking for that applies to the situation perfectly.

"Property is the fruit of labor...property is desirable...is a positive good in the world. That some should be rich shows that others may become rich, and hence is just encouragement to industry and enterprise. Let not him who is houseless pull down the house of another; but let him labor diligently and build one for himself, thus by example assuring that his own shall be safe from violence when built."

Idiots in front of and behind the mic.

80. The reality about the lincoln quote is that he heard it from Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck
Edited on Thu Apr-16-09 05:31 AM by TheEuclideanOne
That is my guess at least. Let me reenact the series of events.

a) The guy being interviewed listens to Rush/Beck continuously to know exactly how he should think.

b) He shows up to this "Tax Day" event. He has no original thought on an actual reason as to why he is there, but he has heard a zillion great quotes from Rush/Beck/Hannity explaining Tax Day and why he should hate Obama. He doesn't know if any of them are true or not, but he sounds smart when he can recite a quote from Lincoln, assuming that he has a chance to talk about it the same day that he heard it on the radio. People may even think that he has read up on Lincoln.

c) Somebody asks him a question about why he is there. Since his taxes did not go up and he does not have taxation without representation, he can't answer that he is actually upset about his taxes. So he chooses to grandstand and talk about something that sounded really intelligent when he heard it on the radio.

d) He tries to give the exact same answer as he heard on the radio. Beck probably read the exact quote that you showed in your post. Unfortunately for him, the closest he can get to remembering it was to refer to it as that "Lincoln thing"

e) It is pretty clear by the interviewer the this is one more guy who is a "Radio Republican" that gets all of his information from the continuous stream of vile heard on the radio and is reciting some line he heard, but still can't explain why he is there. She sees where this is going, but does let him finish his first answer, but doesn't let him have the entire hour to just complain that he is upset that McCain/Palin did not win.

96. If you don't like the answer, walk away
In itself that is biased reporting by taking those you don't agree with off the air, but at least it isn't arguing with the guy.

But the fact that he couldn't put Lincoln's statement into a coherent thought probably verifies that he just heard it on the radio instead of having a full understanding of what it means.

BTW, I heard a lot of hatred of Republicans in the coverage of the tea parties. It's not just about Obama.

46. Well, especially when you're not a good interviewer or debater.
If she was going to ask anything, she should have let the guy make his point about Lincoln and liberty... and then asked the guy if he agreed, then, with Lincoln's decision to go to war against the South, contrary to a strict definition of the "liberty" of those seceding.

She definitely didn't help the situation by shouting over the guy with her argument.

53. And then there's this ...
from wikipedia's entry on the US income tax...
The first Federal income tax was imposed (under Article I, section 8, clause 1 of the U.S. Constitution) during the Civil War, then again in the 1890s, and again after the Sixteenth Amendment was ratified in 1913.

Yes, Lincoln imposed the first Federal income tax. The same Lincoln this guy was using as the argument against taxation. Whiplash-inducing idiocy.

She has limited time on the air and wanted his genuine input..she got none...but a rant that had nothing to do with the question nor the event that was being protested since it was about tax cuts. I don't see how she was argumentative, confrontational or even presumptuous, she was condescending but that was towards the end because she was getting zero sense just madness.

These protests wouldn't be happening if they hadn't been widely promoted by Faux News and Right Wing hate radio, who are bound to cover them during their programs... obliging coverage from other networks. No such mirror organization exists for the Left-of-Center crowd, so actual grassroots protests, even if greater in size, go unnoticed.

Their party installed "socialism" for the richest 2% only, at the expense of everybody else down to their grand-children and some, but we didn't hear a peep from them at all: they were all FOR it.

A truly terrifying combination imo. They don't want to talk about the tax issue, because there isn't one. They are just pissed they are out of power. Boo hoo!

31. I used to work with Susie, and
she's been through a lot post-Katrina. I'm sure she got a lot of "Oooh, you work for the Communist News Network!" crap just by showing up with that logo on her mic. I think she handled that as well as could be expected -- considering that it was live TV.

Go, Susie, go! :D

Unfortunately, I think her attitude was aloof and she had an air of superiority. She was right but her attitude was unfortunate. I think that is too bad. I'd rather see objective coverage.

I think that most of the tea bagging citizens are just ignorant and misguided in their grievances but they do have legitimate oppressors and they should be given a chance to express their position. I feel sorry for the people - they know that they are being ripped off - they just don't know who is really doing it.

Just my opinion.

There's no need. Give them enough rope to hang themselves....by their teabags.

But then she is under a time restraint and can't wait for some jumbled tirade about Lincoln to finish. It's about taxes,,,so she wanted to talk about taxes.

It's so obvious it's really about Obama and losing. Just a tantrum, not a protest.

But here she was telling us what was going on with unvarnished fact. Amazing.

41. She's not even right about the tax cuts, though
This 250k and below tax cut is not true. Look at the Making Work Pay tax credit, the credit is phased out at 75k, not 250k. I don't know where the 250k number comes from.

The homebuyer tax credit is also phased out at 75k, not 250k...

Why is 75k the magic number, and where is this 250k stuff coming from? 75k is still middle class.

89. 75k, not 250k
Tavalon,

Here's what was being referenced in my link above:

"New Making Work Pay Credit. Individuals who work generally get a credit of up to $400 ($800 for joint filers). The credit is refundable, meaning you get it even if you owe no income tax. This change applies for 2009 and 2010. The credit is the lesser of 6.2% of your earned income or $400 ($800 on a joint return). The credit is phased out for joint filers with modified adjusted gross income between $150,000 and $190,000 and other taxpayers with modified AGI between $75,000 and $95,000."

"Homebuyer Tax Credit":Are there any income limits for claiming the tax credit?
Yes. The income limit for single taxpayers is $75,000; the limit is $150,000 for married taxpayers filing a joint return. The tax credit amount is reduced for buyers with a modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) of more than $75,000 for single taxpayers and $150,000 for married taxpayers filing a joint return. The phaseout range for the tax credit program is equal to $20,000. That is, the tax credit amount is reduced to zero for taxpayers with a MAGI of more than $95,000 (single) or $170,000 (married) and is reduced proportionally for taxpayers with MAGIs between these amounts.

Everyone who makes under 250k does NOT get a tax credit, or help buying a home. The magic number seems to be 75k. Is this the new divide between middle and upper class?

I'm over 75k, but nowhere close to 25k, and I rent, and I'm buying a house. I'd especially like the homebuyer credit. And I honestly thought we would all get a tax break. And all I'm saying is it's bs.

....Rupert Murdock is under great pressure as his Republican Machine may be about to Crumble.

I stopped watching Fox as a Republican a long time ago. I am one of those professionals in Michigan out of work who have jumped party's. I have been unemployed for seven years. I am now 62-years old.

I will not read the Wall Street Journal either.

It would be interesting to see how their viewer audiences have declined on a graph/bar chart or something. And for sure it should be posted. I don't think their advertising sales will hold up either.

Can somebody get info on that?

85. Its simple for the simpleton....
President Obama has given you a tax break unless you make over 250k in that case STFU because you deserve to be taxed at a higher rate since you use more of the resources to quench your insatiable appetites these are the limited resources that the poor in this country will have to do without because you suck them all up.

So if President Obama gave you a tax cut why are you teabagging?

I think you are a bunch of rightwing nut cases, homophobes, racists, bigots, and religious intolerants that have been stirred up by Rush Limbaugh, Hannity and Glenn Beck aka FAUX NEWS hate mongers.

So I recommend you all knock this crap off, get another source for your info and give Barack Obama a chance to fix what your idiots have broken.

That CNN towed the Bush White House party line for eight long years makes this seem pathetic and desperate. Nice try, CNN. And thanks for unleashing a recovering tweaker onto the cable news circuit.
