3.  The president said,

"Nothing will be gained by spending our time and energy laying blame for the past". Isn't this exactly what the criminal justice system in this country does?

It's late and I'm out of energy to find new ways to express my disgust and disappointment over how this issue is being dismissed. Whatever else he may accomplish, if he doesn't do the right thing here, he's lost me. This isn't about him promising his administration will not torture suspects. I'm sure they won't. It is about prosecuting the law and thereby ensuring, as best we can, that state sanctioned torture will never occurr again.

5. Your Honor, I killed my wife and kids, but that's all in the past now
Nothing would be gained by bringing this crime to light and punishing me for it. You should just let me go!

Judge: Alright, case dismissed.
