Rep. Joe Barton has proudly posted this video on his Youtube channel of him asking Steven Chu where oil in Alaska comes from. His mocking description reads: "When Rep. Joe Barton asked the Nobel Prize winning Energy Secretary, Dr. Steven Chu, where oil comes from - he got a puzzling answer. "

Apparently Joe Barton doesn't realize he is the chump.

6. He was receiving a lot of (deserved) ridicule from commenters...
and eventually deleted them all and disabled commenting.

Don't know why he didn't take the negative comments as a sign he should take the video down, but it's all the better for me since I get a good laugh out of watching Republicans make fools of themselves.

Edited on Wed Apr-22-09 10:17 PM by frogcycle
claiming Alaska was once tropical so clearly its ok to drill baby drill and burn baby burn.
he was puzzled by the answer because he doesn't know his ass from first base.

5. Epic FAIL!
Chu isn't a geologist, duh! He may have won a Nobel Prize and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Chu#Career_and_research">could easily be described as a genius, but no-one expects him to know EVERYTHING about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paleogeology">paleogeology.

BTW

258 ratings and 1 1/2 stars says it all, lol.

The tool has also disabled comments.

19. Either way, research the origin of oil from any scientific literature; the guy (Chu) is spot on.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with his definition.

But I guess thats the problem, isn't it, we're a "not what you say but how you say it" world. People will pay attention to the smirks, the laughs, the smiles, the winks, the arrogance, and the confidence before actually LISTENING to the words someone is saying; ere-go the Republican Party.

Obviously, anyone who says Chu was stumped is a complete dipshit.

12. What an idiot!
I really don't understand what Barton was trying to get at by talking about oil being pipelined up to Alaska and then pipelined back out ... then at the end saying .. 'so it just drifted up there?' does he think that Alaska's oil 'drifted' up there from Texas? What an idiot!

It is illegal in all 50 states to secede.
The majority of Texans think that Perry is a nut.
Please don't judge a whole state by a few idiots.

13. Energy Secretary NOT F*cking Puzzled by Simple Question
GOD!! I could strangle that smug, smarmy, IDIOT!!! Dr. Chu was in no WAY puzzled by that revolting man's comment. Dr. Chu was caught slightly off guard, but his answer--necessarily contained to less than a minute-- did not to the slightest degree evince any lack of understanding about geology and formation of fossil fuels. What this was was an example of a man highly-qualified for his position, who is new to the game of of politics. What Dr. Chu should have said was something like this: "This hearing is concerned with U.S. Energy policy. If, Congressman, you desire to educate yourself further about the scientific reasons as to how Alaska's great oil reserves were formed, I can recommend a number of books suited for the layman. I am sorry, but this is neither the time nor place for such a discussion."

Sadly, Dr. Chu--used to dealing with reasonable and intelligent peopl--took the bait. But I do not see how he was "puzzled" by the question.

Robert

15. Is it a prerequisite in Texas to be a pompous dumb ass to be an elected official????
Texas, without a doubt, has some of the most smart ass, smirky pompous jerk offs in public office of any state in the union.

This guy fits right in with EVERY OTHER ONE I am aware of. What a total butt f*cker!

21. Texas is turning BLUE
Over 3.6 million Texans voted for Obama, that is more than any other state other than New York and California. There are a lot of progressives in Texas. Texas is gradually turning blue... for example, in the past election the majority of trial judges voted in in Dallas were Democrats. In a recent poll only 18% of Texans agreed with Perry's comments he made last week - the majority of us think Perry is an idiot.

2012 Texas will be BLUE ;)

25. You expect me to believe that the Continental Plates move around?
This is impossible! You mean Egypt wasn't always a desert?

You mean to tell me there used to be millions of Buffalo on the great plains?

Are you saying that the water in Puget Sound used to be home to some sort of Sea Monster called Killer Whales?

I'm from Texas, but would you please explain Hubberts curve for me? What? Impossible!

This is all very disturbing news, I will need to refer to my Bible for comfort and solace.

the type that think they know more than the people who actually do know something. his smirking at Chu's answer was embarrassing to watch. the moran thinks Chu is the idiot when it's him.

30. Next, Barton "stumps" an astronomer...
"So, where did the moon come from?"

Well, it's a bit complicated and there have been a few different theories brought forward, but the most commonly accepted one is that it was formed from the collision of another body with the Earth as it was forming, and the material ejected formed the Moon...

"So it's not made of cheese?"

Um....

("Astronomer puzzled by simple question")
