2. Putting a spotlight on this is one of the best things Anderson has ever done
No one else in the media at his level gives a shit. He's sticking his neck out for these boys and many others like them that are going through hell; it's brave and good what he's doing.

3. I say a national law that fines the parents of the Bully $10,000 each time their kid bullies someone
that should fix up the problem for good

4. We are all responsible to speak up against bullying...
This past Saturday we had our company picnic. I was at the same table as a co-worker and her family. Her 2 sons, one is 15 & one is 7, were bullying their sister, age 10, about looking like a boy. The parents were not saying anything to stop it. I overheard some of the comments & I asked the boys why they were saying those hurtful things to their sister. I told them it was wrong & that they should not treat their sister or anyone else in that way. The mom finally stepped in & yelled at them to stop. The older kid glowered at me but they both stopped bullying their sister. The little girl smiled at me. I started to use the word teasing to describe their actions but changed it to bullying because that is the appropriate term. When we use teasing to describe this type of behavior, we minimize the impact on the victim.

5. Questions
Edited on Fri Apr-24-09 10:53 AM by AlbertCat
I was bullied for being gay my entire time in school...from elementary thru college.

But let's get real here. It's not just bullying....it's "You're gay"! Are obese kids killing themselves? Are "ugly" kids? I'm sure the answer is yes. Are they also being told they are gay?

Also...what role does being the victim of bullying play in development of character? How many who are bullied DON'T kill themselves? Does singling out the bully and punishing them make it WORSE for the victim somehow? Y'know the "You got me in trouble...now I'm really gonna get you!" kinda thing.

And what do you do when macho Daddy congratulates the bully when he gets home for showing that queer who's boss? (so common you wouldn't believe it!)

I'm just wondering. This "no one should be bullied" message seems unrealistic. We've seen what the "No one should fail" mentality has done to education.

6. excellent to see him doing this - yell at your bully kids to stop or you'll send them to a psyche dr
or some other freaky punishment that'll correct them - tell them they'll get sent to a mentally ill facility for bullies (if they're under 12 and will believe you) who attack other humans. I correct kids when I see it, it's scary sometimes, esp. when they're like 4 or 5 of them, but we gotta stand up.
