81. You're projecting....just like they do!
Edited on Fri Apr-24-09 11:27 PM by AlbertCat
Y'see, just like a Repug, you think...1st... that everyone's motivations and methods are just like yours.

So naturally you expect someone to be humbled by their mistakes, and that they will learn a valuable lesson from some introspection and incorporation of facts and things that may not have been known before. You are open-minded and learn from mistakes.

Repugs do this also....project that is....except they think everyone is greedy and will compromise themselves and their friends and family...anyone really, to get ahead in the short term. They are not introspective or empathic. Everyone's acts are for personal gain and once a notion is fed to them, nothing, not even facts, will change the fantasy reality.
That's what they project onto others because that's the way they operate.

144. Spot on. This is what Col. Wilkerson was saying about Cheney and torture.
On Rachel a day or two ago (video avail here). It was so interesting. He say Cheney favors torture because Cheney is a coward and would crack under torture. Therefore, he believes everyone would crack easily under torture. He went on to explain how Cheney didn't serve in Vietnam, took his property off Google earth, was always in an undisclosed location etc. proving he's just a big coward. Then Wilkerson explained that terrorists who are willing to die in attacks like 9/11 are not the same as Cheney and will not crack easily. It stuck with me because, like you said, Cheney was projecting what others would do based on what he would do.

164. Cheney is Afraid because he has generated Mountains of Bad Karma
Over his lifetime, he have probably screwed many people that wish him ill will. Just think of the psychic energy that is projected onto this feeble organism daily. One can see it in his failing health, the incredibly dense character armor he present to the world, and the inability to think like a human.

He's nothing more than an oxygen loving bacteria forced to live in an oxygen free environment, transforming himself into a lesser creature in order to survive.

Projection is human, but their's is pathalogical, to the point where they apply their own subconscious thoughts to others and try to punish them for that which they project.

176. I'm surprised that you haven't noticed the same damn thing on here!
It's endemic. At least a simple majority of people on here in any given day will tell you what someone else "thinks". You even see it in news reports from "reputable" outlets... "Venezuala is unhappy with..." as if an entire COUNTRY could have a single emotion.

This kind of thought structure is pervasive on DU AND FR alike. All they do is chavbe different targets and the subject matter: and it's so obvious I can't even believe I'm having to post this here!

165. These people are compulsive followers
Thinking is not the primary method of doing anything for them, because their "Belief" is stronger than Fact. It has to be, or the contradictions in Politics, Society and Faith woould become to obvious to conceal. Subconcsiously, they know it's all a sham, but to face inward and actually do a real audit of the irrationalism present within themselves scares them to death.

From the Urban Dictionary:

pwned

A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned."

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=pwned

- And its become legend ever since.

94. I think for colloquail use, it should be changed to "pawned."

That sounds like a pretty good term actually. To own her like a pawn? To sacrifice her like a pawn.

The problem with pwned is: this isn't Welsh, it can't be said in English.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=pwned

1. pwned

A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned."

Instead, it said, so-and-so "has been pwned."

It basically means "to own" or to be dominated by an opponent or situation, especially by some god-like or computer-like force.

167. Electronic Gaming, but WoW made it mainstream
It's the result of a quick typo, usually as a result of being careless, or it could be due to a poor translation from a non english speaking programmer.

It is legendary, much like the classic "All your base are belong to us", which was a very popular Shockwave video back in 2003.

Another exmaple is "Somebody set us up the bomb". It's actually quite significant, because software engineering consultants would normally be called in to fix runaway projects that had been outsorced to H1-B consulting companies. One could find a code base filled with hundreds of thousands of misspelled, common english words. When one encountered this, an notified the managers of the project, the answer was to leave it in place, and learn to spell the word the wrong way... That was when you said, thanks but no thanks, and walked out the door to the next contract.

You could implement a wrapper for it, but if that was the prevalent attitude, you knew that other issues would arise down the line, and the manager was an idiot. (this was at HP btw)

3. Al is looking GOOD these days!
And it's nice to see him punch back. When he gives "that look," he's got a lot of power about him. Too bad he didn't act his own natural self during his Presidential campaign - or maybe the years since have just given him additional gravitas. Winning a Nobel does give a man a certain stature, I would think.

That Congresswoman needs a serious hair intervention.

After that, give her to me. Just for a little while .............................

Just think ... 12/12/2000 Sandy votes to let the counts continue ... and Gore wins ... the "liberal media" would have been right there stoking up the fires of an overthrow of the "illegitimate Resident" of the White House ...

Osama bin Laden would have been watching the United States burn on CNNInternational, as the "Patriotic Americans" demanded Gore to be dragged from the White House and hung by the neck until DEAD! DEAD! DEAD!!!

So what if Gore actually did make money from this? He says he doesn't, and I believe him.
It just floors me the way in which making money is taken as a given for Republicans but whenever there's even a whiff of money associated with a Democrat that it automatically makes his or her motives suspect.

Disgusting.

It is more a political and quasi-religious issue. Under those circumstances I consider the science supporting it suspect. No more dissent is allowed. Gore said the issue is closed, no longer subject to theory, and would not let a dissenter scientist speak. Under that circumstance I especially consider the proponents suspect. Dissent would get in the way of their political goals so it must be crushed.

BTW, one of the best movies of all time.

**********

Good lord! Science of this GLOBAL and INTERNATIONAL consensus has nothing to do with politics OR religion.

I suppose you think Evolution is "suspect" too.

You do realize that the US is about the ONLY country in the entire world who even debates these two issues. The US is not the world. When a majority of scientists from every technological country on the planet tend to agree, I don't think is can be political and, as religion has nothing to do with scientific method, it's a moot point too.

BTW....it's also a moot point that it's hot outside. People have GOT to learn the difference between weather and climate!

Neither the fact of GW or Evolution is a theory. They are both happening now. The only theories involved are about the details of their mechanisms. Gore's GW presentations are not political at all. I don't remember any religion in them either.

Can you point us to where Gore refused to let a dissenting scientist speak? Who was this scientist? Did he have a point to make that hadn't already been debunked? Or was HE spreading hype and politics and religion. One dissenter does not make the science itself suspect,

Jesus! :eyes:

185. Who is paying the scientists?
The governments that are interested in the massive political power and wealth to be derived from advancing an agenda based on global warming. You rightly criticize industry-owned scientists. What about those owned by the new global warming power structure? What about all the dissenting scientists not affiliated with industry?

"Can you point us to where Gore refused to let a dissenting scientist speak? Who was this scientist?"

Bjorn Lomborg is an environmentalist, gay, vegetarian and liberal beyond most here on DU. He also thinks global warming is real. But he doesn't believe the excessive hype, statements and goals surrounding it. He likes to shoot down various chicken little hype produced by the politicians such as Gore, who throws around "crisis" and "emergency" all the time. He advocates solutions that are controlled, measured and balanced with other needs of people. Unfortunately that would result in a reduction of political power and careers to be gained on global warming.

When he asked Gore for a discussion of this, Gore replied "I want to be polite to you (said condescendingly) but the scientific community has been through this chapter and verse. We are long past the point, as a society and in the U.S. where we afford to treat this as an on-the-one-hand on-the-other issue."

Even if you believe in global warming you are not even allowed to question the degree or the political goals and programs of Gore. It is no longer science, it is power, money and agenda.

I'm still on the fence in relation to the science. It is plausible, but there are still too many questions for me. But if I do come to accept it I will be on Lomborg's side against Gore, looking for reasonable solutions instead of grandstanding and spreading fear.

I've never been much of a "jump on the bandwagon" lemming-type person.

Edited on Sat Apr-25-09 03:26 PM by Uncle Joe
to the American People while he was in Congress and as Vice-President. Unless you own a one way megaphone corporate media outlet, no political leader has worked harder or more effectively to empower and magnify your First Amendment Rights to free speech, since that Amendment was adopted, that's why they gave him a Webbie Award.

I believe it was because of Al Gore's work in championing the Internet that motivated the corporate media to slander and libel him for the better part of two years prior to the selection of 2000. They saw the Internet as a growing threat to their monopoly to the dissemination of information along with the power, influence and money that goes with that former trusted ability.

Aren't you dissenting now?

So in effect Al Gore was trashed because he worked to empower you to dissent, not to squash it, even if you're wrong as you apparently are regarding the very real threat from global warming climate change.

177. That's not all he did
In Congress he championed the Internet. As VP he championed key escrow. As VP he tried to pressure companies to support the Clipper Chip. As VP he supported the ludicrous encryption export ban and used it to force the other two. The Justice Department followed this view and tried for three years to prosecute privacy advocate Phil Zimmerman because he had made free, effective encryption available to the masses.

Look them up if you don't know whether those were bad things. Bush would have loved to have inherited an Internet with Gore having succeeded in those initiatives. Spying on citizens would have been that much easier for him.

"So in effect Al Gore was trashed because he worked to empower you to dissent, not to squash it"

The trashing was wholly unjustified, taking one statement out of context. Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn think the statement was justified so that should be good enough for anybody. For reference, they are pretty much the real inventors of the Internet.

But if Gore had his way dissent couldn't occur without the government being able to listen in. Thankfully these days we have open encryption giving us many effective ways to dissent without fear of that. Are you happy or sorry Gore failed?

You must be relatively new to the Internet. Gore was THE government demon on the Internet in the mid 90s, and every geek who loved freedom hated him.

Al Gore and the Internet

By Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf

Al Gore and the Internet

By Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf

"Al Gore was the first political leader to recognize the importance of the Internet and to promote and support its development.

No one person or even small group of persons exclusively “invented” the Internet. It is the result of many years of ongoing collaboration among people in government and the university community. But as the two people who designed the basic architecture and the core protocols that make the Internet work, we would like to acknowledge VP Gore’s contributions as a Congressman, Senator and as Vice President. No other elected official, to our knowledge, has made a greater contribution over a longer period of time.

Last year the Vice President made a straightforward statement on his role. He said: “During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the Internet.” We don’t think, as some people have argued, that Gore intended to claim he “invented” the Internet. Moreover, there is no question in our minds that while serving as Senator, Gore’s initiatives had a significant and beneficial effect on the still-evolving Internet. The fact of the matter is that Gore was talking about and promoting the Internet long before most people were listening. We feel it is timely to offer our perspective.

As far back as the 1970s Congressman Gore promoted the idea of high speed telecommunications as an engine for both economic growth and the improvement of our educational system. He was the first elected official to grasp the potential of computer communications to have a broader impact than just improving the conduct of science and scholarship. Though easily forgotten, now, at the time this was an unproven and controversial concept. Our work on the Internet started in 1973 and was based on even earlier work that took place in the mid-late 1960s. But the Internet, as we know it today, was not deployed until 1983. When the Internet was still in the early stages of its deployment, Congressman Gore provided intellectual leadership by helping create the vision of the potential benefits of high speed computing and communication. As an example, he sponsored hearings on how advanced technologies might be put to use in areas like coordinating the response of government agencies to natural disasters and other crises.

As a Senator in the 1980s Gore urged government agencies to consolidate what at the time were several dozen different and unconnected networks into an “Interagency Network.” Working in a bi-partisan manner with officials in Ronald Reagan and George Bush’s administrations, Gore secured the passage of the High Performance Computing and Communications Act in 1991. This “Gore Act” supported the National Research and Education Network (NREN) initiative that became one of the major vehicles for the spread of the Internet beyond the field of computer science.

As Vice President Gore promoted building the Internet both up and out, as well as releasing the Internet from the control of the government agencies that spawned it. He served as the major administration proponent for continued investment in advanced computing and networking and private sector initiatives such as Net Day. He was and is a strong proponent of extending access to the network to schools and libraries. Today, approximately 95% of our nation’s schools are on the Internet. Gore provided much-needed political support for the speedy privatization of the Internet when the time arrived for it to become a commercially-driven operation.

There are many factors that have contributed to the Internet’s rapid growth since the later 1980s, not the least of which has been political support for its privatization and continued support for research in advanced networking technology. No one in public life has been more intellectually engaged in helping to create the climate for a thriving Internet than the Vice President. Gore has been a clear champion of this effort, both in the councils of government and with the public at large.

The Vice President deserves credit for his early recognition of the value of high speed computing and communication and for his long-term and consistent articulation of the potential value of the Internet to American citizens and industry and, indeed, to the rest of the world."

182. You are welcome for those names
You think you're telling me something about the history when I gave you those names?

They are correct about what Gore did. You might also like to know that Cerf opposed Gore on the encryption issue. Bob Kahn was worried about the privacy implications of Gore's Clipper Chip/key escrow, but he thought we had enough safeguards in place to prevent a Big Brother, like court procedures for wiretaps. Boy, was he wrong.

Gore even used the same "we need to do this in order to protect you from the bad guys" reasoning that Bush used for his invasions of our privacy.

As far as awards go, Gore seems to have been able to reinvent himself quite well. Few people remember the past, or even care apparently.

186. Thanks for the "your welcome" but you didn't give me anything I didn't already know.
Al Gore wasn't wrong under the current court procedures of the day, that was before the legal coup of 2000, Bush breaking the law by trashing FISA and the Congress rubber stamping it.

"By Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf
Thu, 28 Sep 2000"

I included the date on that letter of my previous post because apparently Cerf and Kahn had enough regard for Al Gore's political work on behalf of the people and the Internet even after those disagreements of which you cite.

Furthermore my point still stands, not only are you more empowered to dissent because of Al Gore. He hasn't been in power since Jan. of 01 so even if he wanted to, how on Earth could he stop anyone from dissenting, in short your claim is ludicrious.

I suppose you believe Al Gore reinvented all that peer reviewed science in to believing that man made global warming climate change was for real as well?

187. Al Gore does get a little too much credit
The Internet would have happened anyway. It was inevitable. He did speed it up quite a bit, but it was already growing by leaps and bounds every year.

"Al Gore wasn't wrong under the current court procedures of the day"

Yes he was. He envisioned a world where people could not keep secrets from their government. Encryption became a threat to government power when it became freely available to the people. That is why the DoJ under Gore/Clinton went after Phil Zimmermann for three years. Is that a world you want? That is the world Gore wanted.

"if he wanted to, how on Earth could he stop anyone from dissenting"

We are all lucky that Gore didn't get his way. My overall problem with Gore is that he believes in the power of the government over the people, not a government subservient to the people.

188. To the contrary he never got his due credit from the corporate media and that's a large part of the
reason, we got Cheney/Bush.

If the Internet had lagged behind by just say 10-20 years, we would probably be looking at an aging President McCain with an eager Vice-President Palin at his side today.

That may not alarm you, because apparently you don't believe man made global warming climate change is for real anyway in spite of all the peer reviewed science pointing in that direction, so if you don't believe overwhelming peer reviewed scientific evidence on the subject, then climate change tipping points of no return mean nothing to you. No doubt you and Palin would get along just swell on that issue.

So in my book Al Gore has contributed greatly twice to save humankind.

1. By democratizing information, strengthening democracy; our First Amendment Right of Free Speech via the people's power by his championing of the Internet, for which he was slimed by the corporate media.

2. His work in waking the people up on a critical issue which threatens humanity's survival but is all too easy to ignore as you so prove.

Al Gore believed and believes that government should represent the best interests of the people, if he didn't he wouldn't have championed opening up the Internet, he would fought or ignored it. If he didn't believe Government should represent the best interests of the people, he wouldn't have taken the lonely up hill fight against entrenched corporate interests regarding global warming climate change.

Your bear false witness when you say "He envisioned a world where people could not keep secrets from their government." If you have a link to such a slander, please present it.

I would love nothing more than to have lived in a world where Al Gore was President over these past eight years instead of the torture loving, wage wars based on lies, Constitution trashing, illegal wiretapping, usurpers to power of whom you seem to agree with on the issue of global warming climate change.

189. Peer reviewed
"in spite of all the peer reviewed science"

In spite of all the agenda-driven peer reviewed science. It's like Intelligent Design pushed by the creationists. There's an agenda, don't trust them.

"By democratizing information, strengthening democracy; our First Amendment Right of Free Speech"

... and then trying to quash the privacy that allows us such freedom of speech on the Internet.

"His work in waking the people up on a critical issue which threatens humanity's survival "

His work scaring the bejeezus out of people overhyping global warming in an effort to create more government power and personal glory.

"Your bear false witness when you say "He envisioned a world where people could not keep secrets from their government.""

What to search for in parentheses along with his name. Clipper chip ("clipper chip"). Key Escrow ("key escrow"). Keeping strong encryption's free availability suppressed ("itar encryption"). Trying to prosecute the person most responsible for bringing strong encryption to the masses (phil zimmermann), dropped after three years of persecution in the face of -- you didn't guess it -- his right to FREE SPEECH.

"I would love nothing more than to have lived in a world where Al Gore was President over these past eight years"

The general consensus among old-time online rights activists (before the general masses had the WWW) is that him not winning the 2000 election is what gave us this freedom. I can send an encrypted email to fellow activists or have a phone conversation over the Internet (Zimmerman released PGPfone in 1995 giving encrypted phone calls over the Internet. VOIP isn't a new thing.) knowing that the government will never be able to snoop on it with or without a court order. Gore tried to prevent us from being able to do that. I am glad he failed.

Bush was clueless on the whole thing and didn't pursue Gore's agenda. We did get something much worse than Gore in 2000, but that makes Al Gore good only in a relative sense to Bush, which would make almost anyone look good.

Edited on Fri Apr-24-09 10:01 PM by tnlurker
For a town hall meeting for a couple of years now so I could do that. I'm on her mailing list but every time she show up anywhere near me I read about it the next day. I have called her office many times for some advance notice when she will be near but i never get and answer. Probably for that very reason you state. She is afraid to get booed.

By the way she is my Congressional Rep. so I feel she should listen to my concerns, not just the ones that vote for her every election.

right and helping people....republicans ONLY do things because of greed & profit motive and because they were born that way....

Republicans truly can't understand there are really & truly many, many people who don't give a fuck about their idea of what makes life living, money, hate & greed, these are cold-blooded & cold hearted republicans who lie cheat and steal at every turn, smear & distort because they believe everyone is like them, who have the greed sickness to such an extent NOTHING else in life matters to them.

Fuck the earth, lie about it all, if these republicans can make a profit that's all that matters to them....This sickness is what we are fighting, it's something we really have to look at....these republicans everything revolves around corporations and making money, fuck everything, pollute the planet deny it and point the finger at someone else...these are truly corporate fascist republican pigs!

96. Just taking an analysis of the asshat sewage . . .

They're saying that she smacked him down and he lied; WTF else could they say? They cite the same Bloomberg article which gives his investments in hedge funds as proof that he has been making money, but then they don't follow it with any more questions, like where do the profits from those hedge funds go? Probably back to the same non-profit, or they would have if hedge fund investments hadn't soured with all other investments.

These from the people who think the tea parties were a great success. The biggest, most well-promoted and planned event in modern Conservative history, and it drew tiny crowds, of people who made asses of themselves. Conservatives are really living in a bubble universe now, and it's shrinking. They have lost it, and are too loony now to get it back.

I would wish that they gave the same scrutiny to Republican initiatives and who benefits from them, but they would make a mess of that too.

107. Just think......
What our world would be like today if the Supreme Assholes hadn't stopped the recount in Florida in 2000. We wouldn't be in Iraq - a war of choice for "Daddy" and money. None of us can speculate if Gore would have been able to prevent the attacks on 9/11 but at least he wouldn't have eviscerated counter-intelligence in February 2001 and might have done more than skim the intelligence briefly a week before the attacks. But even if we had been hit we would have pursued a very different strategy in Afghanistan.

Our foreign policy wouldn't have alienated our friends and allies. We wouldn't have tortured. Gitmo wouldn't exist.

We would be 8 years further ahead on critical issues such as a prudent energy policy, climate change, health care, etc.

111. She is the vile creature
who didn't know the name of a young man from her district that was killed in Iraq. She pretended he wasn't from her district. But she was wrong.

"Shuster's apology may have been premature. The tiny hamlet of Bon Aqua, Tenn., is where Bohannon lived in the months immediately prior to entering the Army. The Census Bureau places his home in Blackburn's 7th Congressional District.

He lived in Bon Aqua for "close to a year" immediately prior to entering the Army, said Tonya Taylor, 35, who permitted him to stay at her house while Bohannon was dating her daughter.

Bohannon grew up, was home-schooled and was buried in McEwan, which is clearly in the 8th Congressional District of U.S. Rep. John Tanner, D-Tenn. But his last legal address was in Blackburn's district."

Why the fuck can't Al Gore make a profit, even for his own personal gain, in his own private investments in green energy? Is this an old tape where he is still VP? You know its this kind of idiocrasy of the rightie-muntilist that drives me up the wall even more than their actual quasi-nazi beliefs. They are too stupid to even realize that they are the most two faced idiots of anyone. They require liberals to be poor and give all they make and own to "prove" themselves against an unattainable bar that is set to determine if they are as all caring as the righties imagine they claim to be. But the conservative can make a profit on the most vile products on the planet and always be able to use the defense that its all about business and free enterprise and living the American dream. I've heard Stewart and Colbert talk about the size of their balls. But I think its simply a question of stupidity. They're all ultra-maroons, as Bugs Bunny would have said.

161. Actually, Gore was caught off guard by the stupidity of the question
Gore is one of those thoughtful, non-reactionary people that are not equipped for the snappy answer to immediately disarm the attacker.

He works on the basis that all people are good at first, and only after they demonstrate what complete idiots they are, then expends energy for defense.

That is one of the major character flaws that he has, but that what makes Gore so likable. When he has time to put thought and effort into his resonses, it's a thing of beauty, but when put on the spot like this, he could do better.

As for the question posed to him, any intelligent person has asked them internally years ago and has already moved on. These Republicans use tactics like this to turn the clock back years, which confuses everyone about the real threat at hand.

Of course everyone deserves to invest in promising businesses, or would she prefer that he marketed a serious, global, life threatening event the same way that GM Advertised the EV-1, which was through the one time showing of a single commercial on national TV. Meanwhile, you saw the Hummer advertised everywhere, and it received tax incentives to boot..

These Republicans are truly sick.

163. He literally had to stop and think what to say to her that wasn't so insulting
he'd be considered rude but still made sure she was put in her place. You could see the wheels turning
in his head.

169. I believe Blackburn didn't even listen to his answer.
Al Gore stated he was donating his money from the book, movie and investments to a non-profit organization and this totally flew over, don't bother me with the facts, my mind is already made up Blackburn's head.

I also wonder as a private citizen; why should former President Gore be required to divest him self from anything?

I thought the Republicans believed in capitalism?

It's not as if Al Gore were an active President or Vice-President sending our nation off to a war while giving a no bid contract to his intimate military industrial complex corporation.

Thanks for the thread, kpete.

To Al Gore.:patriot:

172. This just makes me sad.
Nostalgic for what should have been, and furious all over again with what was, and is, instead.
