2. A blunder, to be sure . . .
But a big deal? I don't think so. One missing white woman would trump 100 of these incidents on the newsgasm meter.

10. Try living in Manhattan on 9/11
and seeing the planes crash into the towers. Then seeing a low flying plane flying over Manhattan with a fighter jet tailing it. It was a big deal and incredibly stupid.

19. Ditto that
Living through it the first time makes any siting of something like this a little fear inducing.

20. I'll give you "a little fear inducing" . . .
But "Big Deal?" No way.

22. I think it's a big deal
because it shows the callousness and idiocy of the people making the decision to do the photo op.

23. Watching scores of people murdered in an extremely violent way
is a big deal. Having an event bring all of those emotions and feelings to the surface because of some stupid "photo-op" is a big deal as well. Just because you don't think so doesn't make it so. These people had no idea that that the horror of 9/11 wasn't happening all over again. Have a little heart.

24. errrm . . . just because you think it's a big deal *also* doesn't make it so . . .
Being in Manhattan on 9/11 (which I wasn't) was a big deal. Being at the UN compound in Baghdad in August 2003 when it was truck-bombed, killing about 30 people including the UN representative (which I was) was a big deal.

Some stupid stunt that brought up old fears but ultimately injured no one . . . sorry, doesn't make the grade.

25. I was in Manhattan on 9/11
like I said in a previous post, I watched people jumping from the WTC 50 yards in front of me and their bodies exploding on impact. Like things that happen in war this was a big deal to certain people. I could just as easily say that some trigger response to an event that happened when you were in Iraq, isn't a big deal at all. But I am not that insensitive, and maybe I am naive to expect the same from others, especially on DU.

Edited on Tue Apr-28-09 06:56 AM by MrsBrady
who wouldn't think the worst?
But I did think that...

I mean it doesn't take much to figure that this would be a bad idea.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

on edit: what I saw might have freaked me out too...if I was in NYC.

Here where I live....we are in the flight path for a small airport that does have a service area for American Airlines....so I'm used to seeing big jetliners fly somewhat low.
But then again, I'm not in NYC.

21. Of course, they would be afraid.
Look what happened to them in NYC. It's PTSD. It makes them remember the extreme horror of that day. I certainly don't blame them.

5. I can only imagine what was going through their minds
watching what appeared to be a pair of fighter jets who scrambled to stop a jet headed toward New York City.

The only thing more disgraceful than someone actually approving this stunt, are the DUers mocking the reaction of those terrified people.

11. Agreed
I am shocked at some of my fellow DUers reaction to this, but honestly I probably shouldn't be shocked at all. These people saw 9/11 transpire in the safety of their own homes on television. Try seeing planes crashing into buildings in real life. Try seeing people jumping to their deaths one by one in real life. Try seeing these same people hit the ground and exploding on impact. Yes there are people that saw this, and this supposed "photo-op" was incredibly inconsiderate and offensive to the people of NYC. And frankly so are these incredibly rude and inconsiderate comments on DU mocking these people. I actually expected more from fellow liberals, but I guess I should have known better.

6. That's Jersey City, actually
Edited on Tue Apr-28-09 06:28 AM by JHB
It's the plaza on the south side of 30 Hudson St. (the big skyscraper).

That odd structure in the relative foreground of the video is a side view of the Colgate Clock.

Input "6 Hudson St, Jersey City, NJ 07302" in Google Maps and you'll get the closest map & street view they have to the cameraperson's location.

18. Actually it's Bush's fault
If GW Bush hadn't engineered the whole 9/11 tragedy, we
wouldn't be having this conversation right now.

14. I can't understand why they don't just Photoshop the plane
next to whatever they want. If I saw a picture like that I'd ASSUME it was Photoshopped anyway!

17. Expert commentary to that effect:
A bit of a rant by the SFX artist known as Mojo on his blog:

Well, actually, no, it’s not cheaper to use real planes. Yes, some of those special effects movies do cost a few hundred million dollars, but trust me, that’s not because of the eye candy; that money is all wrapped up in the stars’ salaries and a lot of first-class tickets to Canada. Especially now, with computers, you can do FX really cheap! That’s right, the same computers you use to erase people’s identities and put your old math teacher on the no-fly list can be used to create UFOs and airplanes and anything else you can dream up. In fact, I used one to create this picture:

Yup, that’s Sachs Tower in the background, the same building you flew past yesterday! I know, that’s not Air Force One, but it is Colonial One, from the TV series Battlestar Galactica (I hear your commander-in-chief really likes that show). I figured if I showed you a computer-generated 747 flying in front of the building, you’d think I was trying to fool you with a snapshot from Monday morning so I thought I’d give you something a little snazzier - you know, something a little more special-effectsy to make the point.
