His whole point was that there is a distinction between the republicans and conservatives (he's right too). He did not say "Republicans" but "we're" (meaning conservatives who do not want to associate themselves with Republicans.

Listen, I'm a proud Liberal but in all fairness Republicans have in someways betrayed traditional conservative values (Big government, TARP,...) I'm not saying TARP and THEIR version of big Gov is democratic (far from it) but lets just say Bush betrayed traditional conservative values as much as Clinton betrayed Liberal values (deregulation, outsourcing)

THAT is why their numbers are so low; many backward/regressive conservative values have been dished out via republicanism BUT many have also been betrayed as well.

Why were Republicans so unpopular then? I thought Reagan was this god among politicians.
