From the You Tube link:

Howard Dean answered questions and spoke to a crowd of 200 at a health care townhall in Wilmington, Delaware on May 29th, 2009. A breast cancer survivor spoke of how she was forced to divorce her husband to receive medical treatment.

From the SEIU website

Dean's reaction is something many of us feel - a kind of patriotic outrage. "There is not one other industrialized democracy on the face of this earth that somebody with that story would have--not one other country, not one! How could America be like this? This is America for God sakes. Doesn't this make you angry?" He continues, "This is a disgrace, and that is why we need real health insurance reform."

1. Good for Dr. Dean. People like HIM are the ones who need to be desiging health care reform - NOT
goddamed Max Baucus!

3. I wonder if that women didn't just put a target on her back.
Divorcing your spouse and other steps to make yourself legally poor and judgement-proof is a tricky business. There are lawyers that specialize in it. Some people view it as fraud, especially I should think if you are on video essentially confessing to have divorced while still living as husband and wife and holding out to the community as such.

As Dean said, people shouldn't have to do this kind of stuff to get healthcare.

27. Its done all the time here in Michigan and the Courts approve
the divorce settlements and the sick spouse becomes eligible for Medicaid. Quite often the social workers will even guide the parties in this direction. The lady in this video did nothing illegal at least not in Michigan. It is outrageous when couples who view their marriage vows as sacred have to go through divorce in order to get medical care. I can understand Dean's anger.

9. We are an embarassment
It is hard not to be embarassed by our country sometimes. The fact that the wealthy, industrial class managed to prey on our racial and social bigotries to get us to vote for politicians who support this system is so shameful.

I want to be proud of my country, not this.

10. Deans seems angry and unstable. Can't be trusted
Edited on Mon Jun-08-09 03:02 PM by RufusTFirefly
:sarcasm:

It just amazes and appalls me how easy it is to shut down anyone who runs up against the corporate-sponsored status quo.

  • Anyone who shows real, understandable passion like Dr. Dean is dismissed as being too angry.
  • Anyone who calmly puts forth a well-reasoned program is dismissed as a boring policy wonk.

The method the two approaches share is that they target the messenger, not the message.

Of course, normally neither method is necessary. The first and most effective technique is simply to ignore those views that question the status quo. And when you control the mass media by and large that's pretty easy.

    32. Yes! But the corporate gatekeepers won't allow that.
Politics is so dependent on their money that they are able to weed out almost everyone with any real progressive ideas or beliefs.

I don't know about Sanders, but I know that both Dean and Kucinich have been targetted for replacement, and they've barely been able to hang on. It is very good for us but surprising that they have been able to get inside and survive despite the dependency on corporate money.

    19. Wow. I have NEVER seen Howard like that
I know he feels passionately about the subject, but that just brought it home.

No wonder Obama didn't want him in the cabinet as Health Secretary. Washington
might have come to believe that health care was a vital issue requiring immediate
    attention, or something.

On the other hand, Howard is very loyal. As a cabinet Secretary, he would have held his
tongueif asked, out of loyalty to Obama. As a private citizen, he is free to (and he told
me this in exactly these words 4 months ago) "raise hell about issues I care about."

Does anyone have any doubts as to what one of those issues might be?

    26. I just posted that video. That group needs to provide proof Dean tried to arrest them.
Otherwise they have lost all credibility with many people.

Here is the post to the video with all the yelling and screaming, and blaming someone who was just there in Portland visiting.

    http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=385&topic_id=321786&mesg_id=321786

It sickens me to see the way that group is organizing protests against Dean while the Conservadems are hijacking the process.

But keep it up....turn on one who is at least speaking out. That's really the way to win a process.

    29. I do not trust groups that attack the very people trying to work for us.
I absolutely despise the contempt with which the single payer advocates hold those of us who are also advocating for the public option.

Most of us support both options, but a pattern is developing here to put down those who are not pushing primarily for single payer.

I am out of the trusting business with any group that accuses the former party chairman of trying to arrest them.

It is outrageous, and it is not true. He was there as a guest.

I am to the point that I think these outrageous antics and accusations will destroy our hopes for what we can get.

So attack me or whatever the hell you need to do.

But it is just stupid to say Dean is trying to arrest you.

    30. Dean would be pressing for Single-Payer if there was a chance in HELL of passing it.
Public Option is the only way to shoehorn
    in a Single Payer system.

It is the thin end of the wedge.

    Half of America is TERRIFIED
    of "letting the GOVERNMENT DECIDE"
    their health care issues.

They're too rich or too stupid to
care that we're letting FOR PROFIT
    INSURANCE COMPANIES decide these
    issues right now.

    I trust Howard Dean.

    31. Thank You for The Truth in a Nutshell.
Thanks for summarizing our systemic health care disaster so succinctly. I would much prefer to have a government worker routinely pay out for my health care than an insurance company which makes its profit by denying both coverage to those who need it and the claims of those who are paying for the insurance. Doctor Dean is one of the greatest politicians in our country. He truly cares about human beings and puts his formidable energy into improving conditions for all of us.

I was deeply disappointed in Obama's failure to recognize Dean's contributions to his electoral victory, but I am actually relieved that Dean is not restricted by having an official position in the Obama administration. We need Dean to be free to speak out honestly about the issues facing this country, especially as Obama appears to be so closely tied in to the wealthy elites, like Geithner and Summers, who are representing only the interests of their upper class friends and corporate sponsors.

We cannot allow Obama to leave health care reform to the likes of Max Baccus, who is funded by private health care insurers and the big drug companies.

    37. Dean gets it . . .
and anger is the only rational response to this country's so-called health care system. My friend had breast cancer which eventually killed her. At a time when she was struggling to get better, she had to go to work to keep her health insurance. When she was too sick to work and, therefore, too poor to make her insurance payments (without employer contributions), she lost her house to get on Medicare. Even though she had paid insurance premiums for 15 years on the job, she started from square one when she got sick. It's not like life insurance. It's pay and pay and then you get sick and your benefits are taken away when you can't work and can't make the now doubled payments for health "insurance."

It is sickening. This country is full of "I got mine" people who wait until it is their family that is affected by this perverted system to get angry. Wake up, America. This could be you.
