6. Mayor Koch did an excellent job. I agree with him fully.

The two-state solution is the only thing that will work. If the people can live together in peace for a few generations, the differences may begin to seem unimportant and everyone will look back and think "Why were they fighting so much back then? What for?" It's up to the people of the Gaza Strip to decide whether they want to accept and live as good neighbors with Israel or whether they want to continue to live as they are. It's their choice.

Look at the long, long struggle in Ireland between Catholics and Protestants. Then there were the recurring fights between the French and the Germans over the Alsace-Lorraine. Peace can be obtained when people decide to accept each other's rights. Israel needs its own country now. That may change if the Palestinians earn the trust of the Israelis and vice-versa. It will take time. The first step is the two-state solution.

I remember an earlier time when Palestinians entered Israel, worked there, etc. That ended when the Palestinians attacked Israel. It's a shame. The two-state plan is the solution for now.

7. I think the relative merits of the twos-state solution

are not central to the current debate. Koch's support of the two-state plan is laudable, I suppose - but his support for another nation shooting an American national in the head seems slightly less justified.
