MSNC The Ed Show w/ CENK UYGUR - Aug. 26, 2010. Cenk calls out GOP's anti-Muslim, anti-gay demagoguery.

CENK: "Tonight we start with the Party of Hate. The Republican Party in this country has been running on hate and division for the last 50 years. First it was the Southern Strategy meant to discriminate against African-Americans in order to gain White Southern votes. That worked in capturing the South for a generation or more. But they lost the entire African-American vote for even longer. That's what happens when you slap someone across the face.

Then, once that well started to run dry, they apologized. In 2005, Republican chairman Ken Mehlman told the NAACP he was sorry:

'Some Republicans gave up on winning the African American vote, looking the other way or trying to benefit politcally from racial polarization. I am here today as the Republican chairman to tell you we were wrong.'

And then, they unapologetically picked their next target: Gay Americans. They ran campaigns all across America premised on taking away rights from gays in this country. Now, one of the architects of that plan, Ken Mehlman, who ran George W. Bush's campaign in '04, and was the RNC chair in '06, has come out and said that he is gay. Again, our bad, our mistake...

Then there is the vitriolic fight against immigrants, undocumented ones, and in Arizona, just people who happen to look undocumented.

And, of course, there's the granddaddy of all prejudice - fear and hatred stoked up against Muslims in this country. Now it's gotten so bad that a young man stabbed a cabbie in the neck and face Tuesday after finding that out he was Muslim. He yelled 'Asalaam alaikum. This is your checkpoint.' Ironically, asalaam alaikum' means 'peace be with you.' But Islam has been so twisted by conservative demagogues here that a peaceful greeting has been misinterpreted as a war cry. And then used against Muslims.

Then a man yesterday walked into a mosque in Queens and urinated all over their prayer rugs, while yelling that all Muslims were terrorists. Gee, I wonder where he got that idea?"

NEWT GINGRICH (VIDEO): "Nazis don't have the right to put up a sign next to the Holocaust museum in Washington. We would never accept the Japanese putting up a site next to Pearl Harbor. There is no reason to accept a mosque next to the World Trade Center."

CENK: "If the manufactured rage against minorities, and Muslims in particular, was not bad enough, Republicans across the country have added an element of violent imagery to top it off:"

SARAH PALIN (VIDEO): "It's not a time to retreat, it's a time to reload."

MICHELLE BACHMANN (VIDEO): "I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous on this issue."

- snip -

CENK: "Then there was the guy in Pittsburgh who killed three police officers because he was convinced they were coming for his guns. Gee. I wonder where he got THAT idea?"

GLENN BECK (VIDEO): "He will, slowly but surely, take away your gun, or take away your ability to shot a gun, carry a gun. He will make them more expensive, he'll tax them out of existence. He will, because he has said he would, he will tax your gun or take your gun away, one way or another."

CENK: "Then there was the man in Tennessee who shot people inside of what he considered a 'liberal church.' He was reading O'Reilly and Hannity's books on how terrible liberals are, and might have heard a rant like this..."

GLENN BECK (VIDEO): "I beg you, look for the words 'social justice' or 'economic justice' on your church website. If you find it, run as fast as you can."

CENK: "Look, this is destructive to our country. It rips us all apart. The demagoguery, especially based on race or religion, is also destructive to the idea of America, that we are all created equal, and are all equally American. But it is also destructive to the Republican Party. What Black person, gay guy or girl, immigrant, or Muslim American, in their right mind, would vote for the Republican Party? They might as hang a sign around their neck saying 'I hate myself.'

So in the end the GOP will be left holding a shrinking part of th eU.S. population, screaming about how they hate everyone else. That's a terrible political strategy. Don't get me wrong. Demagoguery works in the short run. That's why they do it; they've been doing it since McCarthy, 'cause it gives them a temporary leg-up in the next election. But in the long run, it kills their own brand. You're not going to get a majority of even the White voters you think you're going for by being the party of hate. They're much better than that. They're Americans.

So after a couple of more Muslims and others get attacked and the passions die down, America realizes again that there is no Boogey Man coming to get them, that Sharia law is not about to be imposed in Des Moines or Sacramento, they will reject this politics of hate. Then where will the Republican party be? With even less voters, even more marginalized, and probably even more angry.

We are witnessing the death pangs of a once-great party, the party of Lincoln. That is no more. If they keep going this way, they're going to go from the Grand Old Party to the Sad Little Party, and they'll only have themselves to blame."

27. Cenk says we are witnessing the death of the GOP.

Is Cenk smoking something? We are witnessing the death of the Democratic party. The GOP is going to take over in the fall, rivers of corporate cash facilitated by the Supreme court plus GOP hacking of the servers will make the Democratic party a distant memory. This is exactly like 1994 when Democrats were just so sure the GOP couldn't win, it was ridiculous, surely nobody would buy their snake oil. Surely, surely, surely. This absurd overconfidence and "we're fine!" is always a harbinger of our losing.

Already there are Democrats who are getting ready to head to Canada.

Our side is demoralized and won't even vote. It's a perfect storm for Republicans because we absolutely refuse to fight.

28. IMO, we have
already witnessed the "death" of both parties.
We now have only the corporate party.
Both "party" facades, try to keep us divided with their respective talking points. Yet, when all is said and done, in every instance, the laws, regulations, etc... all are for corporate benefit.
Personally, I do not think citizens can rebuild on the ashes of what used to be a particular party.
Our only hope, IMO, is for a strong anti-corporate uprising in our political process.
Sadly, President Obama, by refusing to have the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE REINSTATED, has made this a slim possibility.
When Americans are filled with propaganda every minute of every day, they have no basis for comparison.
When my generation dies out, the ones who had the benefit of honest information and differing viewpoints, then the assimilation will be complete.

35. I agree, unfortunately it seems as though when a political party dies
Edited on Fri Aug-27-10 11:06 AM by Larry Ogg
it looses its soul / conscience, at which time it becomes kin to a zombie and works for the predator class and their corporations.

The problem is that the ideology of the party remains within the hearts of the people and that becomes the premise of their undoing.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=8987193&mesg_id=8995258
excerpts from articles)
People of conscience also cling to their ideology as if it is some monolithic shield that will preserve a way of life and protect them from evil, and the leaders play the role of both champions and gate keepers of the ideology, but as psychopathic influence gains a foothold, over time the ideology is gutted and morphs into something that would no longer be recognizable by its original founders, yet there remains the façade of the ideology in which the politicians wrap themselves in; praising it and glorifying for the benefit of followers who are called upon to defend it with their lives in the name of some noble cause, but more like defending it against the evils pathocracy itself conjured up to gain power, and what it then created simply because of the nature of the beast, i.e. the consequences to its actions. But eventually people start becoming more and more aware that something isn’t right and they begin to resist, and eventually they become a threat to the pathocracy, and the new enemy of the state; “if your not with us you are against us” becomes the meme of anxious in-groups being torn apart over what the ideology is supposed to be as opposed to what is becoming or has become.

31. Maybe. Maybe not.
What we're seeing right now might be the last stand of the far right. Think about it. Today, two out of five Americans under 18 are minorities. The hate the GOP is fomenting probably isn't sitting well with them. Plus, a great many of Republicans--if not most--are over 65. The younger voters, those between 18 and 35, tend to lean liberal on the more social issues. Right now, Rethugs can only appeal to their base because they've managed to marry their corporatist goals to hot button issues and fear tactics that appeal to the conservative sheeple, i.e. gay marriage, abortion, scary blackies coming to getcha. Those issues might not really resonate with younger voters and minority voters who might tend to be more tolerant of many of the social issues that conservatives hold sancrosanct. Plus, the far right wing is really shooting itself in the foot with this immigration business in Arizona and their push to repeal citizenship of children born to immigrants in the U.S. They alienated African-Americans for generations by their opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Blacks have voted over 90% for Democrats ever since. They might be doing the same to the Hispanic vote.

Not to mention that their most faithful constituency--the Southern, bigoted, pre-Civil Rights, segregationist, over 65 generation--will probably be dying off or drooling in nursing homes within the next 15 years or so. They may win big in the short term, but the writing on the wall is there. They might be todays dinosaurs.

The corporatists have had their way a great deal because they've managed to sneak their agendas into the fears, prejudices and mindsets of the rest of the GOP base. Really, most Rethugs that are anti-abortion and anti-gay are also anti-Union and believe that global warming is a hoax. That's because the GOP has managed to merge hot button issues with corporatist issues until the two are undistinguishable.

Future generations that are more tolerant of social issues might not hear the twin mantras of "gays are evil and tax cuts for the rich are good." If they have more laid-back views of social issues, they may just hear "tax cuts for the rich are good." Not a great political platform for conservatives to get elected on.

It may not happen this way. The Repubs might keep a stranglehold on the U.S. for the next 100 years until we're emanciated drones that all live in shanty towns. But, I really believe that there's a tsunami of younger and minority voters getting ready to bust their bubble. Their hateful, racist rhetoric, at a time when almost a third of the country is now a member of a minority group and that number increases every day, might come back to bite them in the butt--hard.

37. The problem is that there are not enough young people that are political aware,
and the right wing propaganda machine is lambasting them with false reality and delusions, and far to many of them are buying it hook line and sinker; this is something the "fairness doctrine" could correct but the Democratic Party, it seems, stands remiss to the notion of fair play or letting the uninformed hear the progressive sides of the story. There's a hard question that more and more democratic voters should be asking themselves, "is the democratic leadership just ignorant, or is ignorance the facade of complicity? The movement of an unchecked right wing hysteria campaign will tear this country apart, and Restoring the "Fairness Doctrine" should be at the top of the list if sanity is to maintain a foothold. But maybe we should also ask, who benefits when all sanity is finally lost?

44. I wish this were true.
I see a hateful, greedy, self-important GOP.
And, I see a Democratic party that appears to fear the GOP. So, the people still get all of the GOP corporatist policies while they watch a Democratic party doing the "bait and switch." Same result....corporatist policies.
These policies are quickly destroying the majority of citizens economic means.
We have a Democratic President and Congress, yet all of the legislation is corporate targeted.
There is very little rage coming from "our elected officials" over this obvious situation.
What else can our citizens believe other than they have totally sold out? I can reach no other conclusion.

9. Eventually, they will run out of scapegoats.
And if they are not already finished before that time, they will - like a star in its death throes - expand and destroy everything around them before they finally burn out and fade away,

The policy of hate ends in darkness of one kind, or another.

until he figured this shit out. We got a robo call earlier today against Bruce Brailey supporting the fictional ground zero mosque. and I've seen the Iowa ad already. disgusting. So a local Jewish Synagogue is very nice to Christians who came in during a field trip. But Christians can't be nice to muslim's.

So while you have the idiotic right claiming the left are Nazi's. guess what they are echoing. Is he a Muslim. is she a muslim.. hmmm better put some sort of arm band around muslim's. Lets boycot the muslim shops. Round the muslim's up put them in a building. That would be the Tea Party. Nazi's. All the while Usama is probably laughing his mouth off at all this because these right wing morons fell right for his trap. Brainless....

21. The Greasy Oil Party and Hate
I usually ignore the party of NO when they're being their usual obstructionist selves, on the theory that when your opponents are destroying each other, you stand back and watch the fun.
But I will not stay silent or passive in the face of hate. because when anyone does that, anytime, hate wins.

That's what's been going on for the last few months in this nation. The ugly truth is this: we've been so cowed, and so backed into a corner by cheap sleazy people. politicians, "terrorists" and ice cream men that we're forgetting who we are, where we came from, and what the Ideal of America means to a world captivated by the easy, the chessy, and the sleazy.

Simon Wiesenthal the Nazi hunter, said something like this:

"Men like Hitler and Stalin are alive, and still out there. They are waiting for us to forget. That is how they will be reborn."

Each and every time someone out of their head with irrational media stoked fear stabs someone, or uses sharp words to injure another person, we ought not see Muslim, nor Jew, nor Christian, nor black, white and yellow, but we all ought to see ourselves taking the blows, cuts and the harsh words. The sooner that everyone understands that these hate filled, fear driven people are attacking ALL OF US the sooner good people will stand up with gentle, profound and lasting bravery, and say "No more" to those who make easy marks of those so desperate for something to hold onto that fear and hate come so easily to hand.
ALL OF US must stand up, and stand firm in the face of tyranny and hate, because that is the only way that hate losses, as hate always does, in the end.
It will take bravery to stand up and say "If you want to stab a Muslim, come, stab me first. I'm a Jew, and then stab a Christian, too. Why wait? That's what hate will become." sooner or later. But if we take the blades of hate away from these people, at least we will live up to the very best of what America and freedom were founded upon.

Americans have the courage to be better than this, and put a stop to this theft of rights and freedoms. It's high time we stated acting like it again, before hate wins, and freedom is snuffed like a candle flame, and the world, our world, is left forever in darkness.

are also doing something much more dark, devious and dangerous when they mess with Muslims like this.

I have come to the conclusion that they are pulling out all the stops to provoke another 9/11 on President Obama's watch. Then they can say, at the cost of untold American civilians' lives, "see, he couldn't keep us safe".

Edited on Fri Aug-27-10 11:22 AM by ooglymoogly
If Powerful "capitalists" hiding under Machiavellian Corporate cloaking devices, had not contrived a way to blame all their theft, in the smoke and mirrors of folly and hate; To blame their most blatant calumny on Democrats; And to destroy them once and for all; By passing their most treacherous legislation under a fake Democratic majority; A feat they could not do under their own banner; A majority that is in fact a DinoPug majority; As per Rahm et al; By running Republicans as dems; Now churning out pug legislation, chock full of poison pills, as fast as corporate lawyers can write it; Pug legislation a media, only 90% fake, owned by these shadows; Far right egislation propagandized as centrist.

Legislation that will be branded with a big neon "D"; For history, the "media" and the people of this country for eternity; When the poison pills begin to decimate the Democratic party; To indelibly record and remember with the angriest hate; What Democrats have done to this country; While pugs chortle in the folds of their fat; Pulling the rug from the people of this country; Decimating their lifelines once belonging to them, stolen in broad daylight.

A new world order insulating the mafia dons of the ruling class, is not compatible with a healthy and thriving middle class to challenge and threaten it for its treachery. A middle class made ever more secure and thriving by "The New Deal", paid for and owned by themselves; An all contingency insurance policy to keep them safe from sickness and poverty; Benefiting themselves to the exclusion of the fat cats who drool after it.

Starting with baby steps, relentlessly, it must be destroyed for the plan to come to fruition.

"O" himself once a corporate Lawyer (Miner, Barnhill & Galland) and admitted capitalist, forming pug commissions to hide complicity, while dissecting the New Deal in the creep of the back rooms of the hell that is present day Washington; Stinking from the rotting brains of pug shills; To destroy a now sacrosanct new deal that has kept the folks of this country safe and whole for many decades, insuring a healthy middle class.

Commissions looking for a boneless place to slide the knife; Making the name Democrat, no more than shit, unelectable for Decades if ever again.

A brilliant plan that has been in the works for many decades; Finally with more than enough Dinos operable and in full throttle; With the wicked witch of the east, "Rahm the shill" insuring it all run smoothly; Always recruiting more pugs to run as Dinos; While pulling the rug from Democrats.

A metamorphosis of a butterfly; Into a wool eating moth, consuming the woof and warp of our world.

The success of these thugs is now, barring a miracle, a foregone conclusion.

43. Brilliant, but . . .
. . . Cenk neglected to factor in the possibility of stolen elections. Perhaps the GOP ranks are dwindling, but a few strategically placed IT personnel can make the picture look way different.
