The serious part of Colbert's remarks

The last question and answer of the hearing below...

CONGRESSWOMAN JUDY CHU: Mr. Colbert, you could work on so many issues, why are you interested in this issue?

COLBERT: I like talking about people who don't have any power. And this seems like some of the least powerful people in the United States are migrant workers who come and do our work but don't have any rights as a result. And yet we still invite them to come here, and at the same time ask them to leave. And, you know, whatsoever you do for the least of my brothers, these seem like the least of our brothers, right now. And I know that a lot of people are the least of my brothers because the economy is so hard, and I don't want to take anyone's hardship away from them or diminish it or anything like that, but migrant workers suffer, and they have no rights."

111. I would have liked to see him do the whole thing as himself, actually
Reminds me of John Stewarts interview years back where he bashed the talking heads for the damage that they are doing (sorry, names escaping me). Both of them are geniuses IMHO and I love for people to see just how brilliant they are. I think that the schtick was funny, but I think would have been more powerful if he wasn't trying to be funny. Think about it, he just said a few sentences at the end and the media is too frightened to even play that.

7. Wow! He quoted my favorite scripture from Matthew!
I've posted that all over DU... awesome! It's key, it really is! All of the vile things the GOTP want to do to people... and all the alleged "Christians" they are courting... this needs to be a bumper sticker, and a protest sign. It fits so many situations we find ourselves fighting!

109. I'm not a Christian, but I try to remember and live by that scripture. I'm reminded
of a story (I'm sure I'll get it wrong since I read it in Catholic School 40 years ago) about Damien and the Leper. That a leper showed up at Damien's door and Damien brought him in and embraced him! The leper morphed into Jesus.

Is that where that scripture comes from?

It was very powerful to me and as I said, I try to live my life by that. When I'm having trouble with someone I look them in the eye and think "Hello, God" -- it really helps me put things in perspective immediately.

13. Matthew 25: 41-46
41"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'

44"They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'

45"He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'

46"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

79. The Gospel of Matthew
also contains the Be Attitudes - i.e., Blessed are the Peacemakers as well as the notion of turning the other cheek.

It is often cited by the great philosopher Tolstoy (as well as Ghandi) as the philsophy of Christianity that he subscribes to but that is least followed by the Church...His non-resistance to evil by force was an interpretation of turning the other cheek. Tolstoy was excommunicated by the Russian Orthodox Church and some of his works were banned. Tolstoy uses this Gospel of Matthew to distinguish the teachings of Christianity in the New Testament from the teachings in the Old Testament (which in more than one place argues for 'an eye for an eye' retribution type of judgemental philosophy).

Tolstoy was opposed to any organized religion and found that people who piously subscribed to no organized denomination were in his view as equally religious or Christian in their walk and talk as those subscribing to an organized religious institution.

The religious right in this country is a tool of fascist forces.

See post #53 below for the lyrics.

Shows how much the "Religious Right" assholes are actually NON-Christian -- they want nothing to do with the teachings of Christ, but are all about Old Testament hate and other bullshit. Totally ignore Matthew, the Sermon on the Mount, etc. Selfish fucking bigoted assholes.

kind of makes the point. :)

What I heard somewhere ... it was either NPR or KYW (owned by CBS): "Colbert stayed in character almost the entire time, and now some are saying that his appearance was a waste of time and taxpayer dollars" because he didn't reply "seriously". OMFG these people have no clue, if they didn't even understand what he was saying even when he was "in character".

for these workers....such hard labor for so little.

I got into a fight w/ a woman yesterday at Trader Joe's....she was complaining about those that disagreed w/ the Gov. of AZ. I told her to go pick her own lettuce. No one works harder than migrant workers. No one.

And they are constantly exploited. The women are raped. It makes me sick.

Thank you, Steve Colbert.

This is why I find AZ SB1070 so offensive. You know these neo-nazi wannabes in reality like having these people here to do the landscaping, cut the damn palm trees, pick fruit and vegetables, clean their damn houses, and all the other menial labor jobs that are so beneath Americans these days. What this is really all about is making sure that they NEVER EVER assert any rights to better working conditions and better pay. As an added bonus SB1070 serves to alienate American citizens of latin descent. I believe that Russell Pearce and his neo-nazi associates are hoping we will all just pack up and leave before we become the majority in this state which is set to occur in the span of a generation. This Puerto Rican has one question for these stupid bastards. If you hate Mexicans so damn much why the hell would you choose to live so close to Mexico?

78. Arizona was won from Mexico in the
the Spanish American War. We signed a treaty with Mexico stating all landowners could be US citizens. It is odd that the states that are having the worst immigration problems. California , Texas , Colorado , New Mexico and Arizona were "won" in the Spanish American War. Mexicans who had had ranches for generations just ended up homeless. Lots of thinkers of that era were appalled at what we did as a country to the Mexicans. Mark Twain, Thoreau and that whole group of enlightened people were very much against it. Ulysses S Grant stated a stronger country waging war against a smaller one was not right. Even he did not approve. Our history books would never relay that important aspect of our country's beginnings.

35. It's nothing more than
an elaborate hypocritical balancing act. They bitch and complain about the illegal workers being here, but also want their jobs done. There's no confusion allowed to them because if they really want to get rid of illegal workers, they'd GO AFTER THE EMPLOYERS OF THOSE SAME WORKERS. However, they have to be hypocritical about it because THEY ARE THOSE EMPLOYERS. Christ on a fucking stick, these people need to be choked. (sorry for the shouting)

Edited on Fri Sep-24-10 08:05 PM by teknomanzer
These people behind this convoluted labor scam will tell you that they DO go after the employers. Arizona has the toughest laws they say. Well this is how it plays out. If you are working here undocumented and you get caught you will have to spend some time in Blowhard Arpaio's concentration camp. If you are the employer of said undocumented worker NO CRIMINAL CHARGES WILL RESULT.

I actually presented Blowhard Arpaio with the question shouldn't we put these employers in his jail. The sheriff is very fond of his jails and speaks at great length about how much he enjoys keeping them filled with all the lawbreakers and scum of the earth and so on. He even goes so far as to brag about how the inmates prefer Tent City to the indoor jail facilities, which are no doubt in very poor condition since he illegally spent the funds on pursuing and intimidating his political enemies and got zero convictions (but that wasn't the point.) Well, old sheriff Joe hemmed and hawed and talked about how it was a civil matter, blah, blah, blah. Maybe old Joe did not get the point I was trying to make. Hard to tell really since the young republican douche bag moderator did not read my question as I had written it down. English is so hard for these people to learn.

So to summarize if you are undocumented and get caught you get treated worse than an animal before they hand you over to ICE. If you are the employer of said undocumented worker first the state must prove intent then you might get your business license SUSPENDED for a brief period of time and you might have to pay a fine. How is that for hypocrisy?

don't WANT the illegal workers to actually go away. They just SAY they do. They just keep the heat on the unending river of illegals through racism and a shitty economy and voila! you've got a Lazy Susan of practically slave labor. It's like outsourcing INSIDE the country. Makes me fucking sick.

59. Good, somebody gets it. I get that nauseated feeling too.
Now, I want to make it clear that I'm not dropping "neo-nazi" around as hyperbole. The author of SB1070, Russell Pearce, is an associate of J.T. Ready, a self avowed national socialist. This is the guy now patrolling the desert with his other sick fuck racist troglodyte crew looking to get into a gun battle with Mexican drug runners. I look at it like a twisted love story in reverse. I really do hope they find each other out there in the desert. I would have two regrets about it though. The first being that I couldn't be there to catch it on film. The second being that Jan Brewer would be able to support her bat shit crazy story about bodies in the desert.

J.T. Ready is a fucking class act. This clown has a real nice profile on the Southern Poverty Law Center web site. You can look at it for two seconds and realize we are discussing a criminal here, so naturally he is going to end up being the president of the college republicans at the local community college here in Mesa before joining and getting kicked out of the USMC - fucking hoo ahh. (which makes me wonder about the pudgy little bastard now holding that position who butchered my question to Joe Arpiao.) Ready ran for local offices as a republican with a racist platform and eventually landed the position of precinct chairman. Which was okay with the republican establishment until they realized they would be embarrassed by the fact that Ready was marching with neo-nazis in Nebraska.

What does all this have to do with Russell Pearce? Crooks and Liars website sums it up pretty nicely. Russell Pearce, Joe Arpaio, and J.T. Ready are all buzzards from the same flock. This is a facet of the story that America does not get to hear from the corporate media whenever the subject is Arizona's new fascist law. The only exception being a bit done by Rachel Maddow. I wonder if people really knew what kind of folks crafted that law would they still be in favor of it? Its a crazy ass country we live in these days. A bat shit crazy segment of society accuses a black president of being a nazi while being in favor of a law crafted by ACTUAL nazis. Makes your fucking head spin thats for sure.

But it now appears that Pearce just fired blanks with his "Wo sie ihre papiere sind?" law. It is not working as planned. Indeed some people have left, but it now appears that federal law allows for some measure of due process. Some people turned over to ICE may even qualify for work visas thus providing the very papers they need as required by this law. And as for those who are deported after a couple of weeks, they can be back in country within three days of stepping off the bus in Nogales. Epic fucking fail.

That aside the law is still a piece of legislative crap straight from the bowels of the racist republican party. I do not expect to be hassled by this law, but the very idea that one of Sheriff Joe's thugs can severely fuck up my day just because they THINK I do not belong here does not sit well with me. I am entitled to equal protection under the law, and my natural tan, or my ability to communicate in more than one language, or my right to wear shitty clothing while doing yard work should not eliminate that right.

Here are some links to back up my rant. Enjoy.

Basic exploitation. Using and abusing the most vulnerable to get around any laws that guarantee a minimum wage, benefits or worker safety.

What I find especially ironic is that most of these people I've encountered have greater work ethic and family values than so many who denigrate them.

23. Colbert's statement
I was so glad to hear him have a chance to say something like that - obviously from his real heart. Did anyone see the very beginning of the hearing? I tuned in just as it began, and they hadn't started any testimony yet, but John Conyers was saying something about wanting Colbert to leave the room, and just submit his testimony by paper.???? What was that all about???? I didn't hear the first of it, so don't know how started.

Colbert, in his character, was terrific, and I loved watching the faces of the Repubs as he spoke. They couldn't decide whether to be amused, or be insulted. The audience was apparently entertained, and laughed a lot!

60. Yes, he really is a genius.
Long after history has forgotten about Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly, Chuck Todd, and the rest of the doofuses that make up the popular American media today, Colbert will be remembered as the greatest political commentator of this generation.

The media has seized on the opening address for their ratings, and are playing outrage.

I think people will be talking about "the stunt he pulled" with scant attention going to what was truly going on.

Most politicians are completly DISCONNECTED from the hardship of the least among us.

But are steadily CONNECTED to Faux News, Wall Street's and the MIC's constant whinners... :grr:

53. There was a hymn based on that quote in the "Hymnal for Young Christians" when I was a kid
(for those who don't remember or were too young, this was a Catholic folk mass hymnal, although we used it in the Presbyterian congregation I grew up in):

Here's the words:

"Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me.

When I was hungry, you gave me to eat;

When I was thirsty, you gave me to drink.

Now enter into the home of My Father.

Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me.

When I was homeless, you opened your door;

When I was naked, you gave me your coat.

Now enter into the home of My Father.

Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me.

When I was weary, you helped me find rest.

When I was anxious, you calmed all my fears.

Now enter into the home of My Father.

Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me."

65. I was just trying to find the phone number for the local Philly news channel to complain about their
lame-ass coverage, which, of course, consisted of showing a silly little snippet of his remarks and them blabbing about how pissed of the Rs were about him being allowed to speak. Of course they wouldn't dare air the part you showed above and that I knew of only from Olberman tonight before I just checked in to DU.

I'm so effing sick of the decidedly UNliberal media I could just spit. I guess they may have a place for comments on the site, but I want to actually speak to someone.

I also see they have twitter and facebook, but I don't do those.

I cannot find a number anywhere for the the station--KYW/CBS 3, Philly. I'm usually pretty good with the Google, but I give up. If anyone can help--here's the news channel website: http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com. It was on today's Eyewitness News at five, but I'd be happy for any number for the station. (Why do the RW complainers always seem to always have the numbers?)

Thanks for any tips!

117. Thanks. I actually did manage to find their contact info/ I also sent the follow to their Consumer
Complaint department:

My complaint is about the conservative media bias of Eyewitness News, resulting in a failure to help create a democracy's necessary informed electorate.

The latest example is their (your) 9/25/10 5 AM Eyewitness News coverage of Stephen Colbert's testimony testimony before the Congressional Committee Hearing on Migrant Workers. They (You) pandered to the hysterical Right's distorted view and failed to report the fact that Colbert shared some intelligent, important, and quite serious information.

Here is one example.

And, you know, whatsoever you do for the least of my brothers...these seem like the least of our brothers, right now. And I know that a lot of people are the least of my brothers because the economy is so hard, and I don't want to take anyone's hardship away from them or diminish it or anything like that, but migrant workers suffer, and they have no rights."

Perhaps their (your) "reporters" could search out the rest. (Hint:http://takeourjobs.org/)

Also, I challenge them (you) to find out which Republican called Sesame Street's Elmo before a congressional committee. (Hint: That particular congressperson ended up spending some time in jail, without Elmo.)

Sincerely,
Libby

66. That's someone who clearly demonstrates true Christian
values. We had aluminum siding put on our house this summer by a crew of non-English speaking hispanics. Foreman could speak English, although not great. They worked 10-12 hours in the blazing heat for almost an entire week. They only took several very short breaks and did outstanding work. I don't know if any were undocumented and frankly don't care. I can't imagine finding too many Americans willing and able to work that hard under those conditions.

92. I think when someone like Colbert testifies, that person
brings the power of their persona. It grabs attention and for a moment puts the spotlight on the issue. Hopefully his appearance does bring more attention to the migrant workers.

He also has worked on the farm with them, addressed the issue (in his Stephen Colbert manner) on his show an I believe it is an issue that is important to him - for whatever reason.

113. He was asked to testify BECAUSE ....
Edited on Sun Sep-26-10 12:43 AM by Tx4obama
He was ONE of the only sixteen people that signed up for the "Take Our Jobs" campaign and showed up.
http://takeourjobs.org/
He worked with the organizer of the program (he helped promote the campaign on his show a while back), then he showed up on the farm for the day to 'work'. He also met with Representative Zoe Lofgren at 'a farm' and interviewed her regarding the subject of migrant farm workers. She is the one that asked Colbert to come and testify in front of Congress in order to get the media to focus on the issue.

If the media had done a better job of reporting the WHOLE story, then a bunch of people would have had a better understanding of what was really going on.
