2. So, Hartmann - who is religious himself - has an atheist on
Edited on Tue Nov-30-10 11:51 AM by stopbush
and then after he says buh-bye to the atheist, he goes off on a rant about how atheists are just as zealous as the religious nuts. He repeats the usual stuff about the atheists who caused wars. He even posits that the French Revolution was fought in the name of wiping religion from governance.

Why not keep the atheist on and direct those thoughts at him so he could rebut them?

Cowardice from Mr Thom.

3. I get Thom's point about the 'numinous' as Hitchens likes to call it
but anybody that is going toe to toe with that idiot from the Catholic League deserves our full throated support.

4. Several problems
1. "Religion of atheism" and "evangelical." I don't understand why the religious want/need to define atheists in terms of the religious.

2. "Atheism dangerous to democracy" Are you kidding me? It is a false premise to say that those people he names "fought in the name of doing away with religion." That IS NOT why they did the things they did. It was one facet of how they hoped to gain the control they wanted. They saw religion as a stumbling block to their absolute control.

3. Religion is responsible for civil rights. OK, perhaps in some roundabout way, but if you look back to the concept of civil disobedience, that concept comes from the transcendentalists who were far from traditionally religious. Emerson was banned from Harvard Divinity School for his speech and radical thoughts about Jesus not being a real person. But not for religion, Emerson would still have fought for civil rights. Plenty of transcendentalists were not religious.

5. Yep. The normally reliable Hartmann has huge blind spots
when it comes to his religious beliefs and his belief in the wacky JFK CTs. His reason is nowhere to be found when either of those subjects arise.

6. The Truth for Thom
I like Thom's perspective most of the time but I think he totally missed it here. He completely misses the point of atheism...atheist want people to drop the superstitious belief in a man-made magical mystical being in the sky that is watching your every move just waiting to come down and judge you while answering none of their prayers.

If Thom truly understood religion and especially the religious texts he should have found that the magical being in the sky has so many imperfect actions for such a "perfect" being.

These superstitious religious beliefs, as much as we have separation of church and state, are constantly trying to be blended into our government.
