Our $13.7 trillion national debt was run up by two wars, tax breaks for the rich, a Medicare prescription drug bill written by pharmaceutical lobbyists and the Wall Street bailout — all unpaid for. After leaders of a White House debt commission floated bad ideas to deal with deficits, like raising the Social Security retirement age to 69, Bernie assembled seniors organization, labor unions and others in to come up with ways to cut the deficit without hammering the middle class. "At a time when the middle class is disappearing and when the top 1% now earns more income than the bottom 50 percent, this Congress is going to have to be very careful about how it goes forward on deficit reduction," Sanders said. "In my view, we must not balance the budget on the backs of working families, the elderly or the poor. Instead, we’ve got to do away with the enormous tax breaks and loop-holes that have been given to millionaires and billionaires and take a hard look at the excessive amount of money we spend on the military as well as some other government agencies."

top 1% holds 6 Times the Financial wealth that of the bottom 80% who hold only 7% of financial wealth.. so the top 20% holds ..93%.. of all the Financial wealth of America.. they didnt get it honestly. Buffet only pays 14% income tax, Gates pays what a family making $80,000 does.. and the Bu$h43 tax cut only benefits the top 2.5% richest not mom & pop.

I would have thought that the Senate Democrats would have made sure to attend and give him a standing ovation. The SILENCE was deafening. Working class citizens meet the only person in the entirety of congress who gives a damn about your welfare. The middle class has been screwed, blued and tattooed.

Brutally hard to hear but so eloquent and honest on all points taken . . . We are becoming the newest of the Banana Republics and people seem content to stand by and let it happen. I for one think, if Obama does not get some grit, stand up to McConnel, Boehner and the like now he has totally lost face with everyone who cast a vote for him. The writing on the wall by these Repubs is he will be a 1 term president. so be it, no problem taking them to task and make your loyal Dems proud of you. :kick:

36. A stunning wake-up call
This thirteen minute speech by Senator Sanders is a stunning wake-up call, one which should be discussed by every American citizen, for Senator Sanders is telling the truth.

The rich are just getting richer, and would like no more and no less than to bring back the days of robber barons, the days when union organizers were publicly assaulted. These people who make up the top one percent are just getting richer and we must do something about it.

I agree with Senator Sanders that we must do something, and if that means raising taxes on the top one percent, then so be it, for it must be done, and Senator McConnell and those on the right who dare to raise their voices to protect the rich should be made to try living on a pittance for a while - to see how they like it.

49. It is not just the working class...
we have to realize that it is not just the middle class getting screwed- it is the poor also. We keep ignoring the poor at our own expense. The only way we will get anywhere is if we join together against the rich of this country. As it is now, we are conditioned to only think of the middle class, because that is all the media and politicians talk about. This is by design. If we all banded together there would be hell to pay, but we are far too selfish and ignorant to do that, unfortunately.

60. Bravo Bernie...Bravo!
Every time I hear him speak he says something relevant and it hits home. He hit for the cycle on this one. Brilliantly put, Bernie. I'd love to ram this up the ass of every right-wing, tea party knucklehead and make them listen to what he said. All these dumb ass Tea Party types in rural America and in parts of the country where there is barely a middle class should hear this speech. Instead they listen to Fox rail against the liberals and these dumb asses eat it up. I've told many friends of mine many, many times, so many of these people who listen to Fox and Limbaugh and Beck just don't have a damned clue. They're being led astray by pure bullshit by these people and they don't get it one bit. Sadly, it all probably fell on deaf ears.
