David Pakman: And speaking of, it is the holiday season, we have set up The David Pakman Show gift subscription. We've been asked for this for a while, and I figure it's December, we're in the middle of Hanukkah, Christmas is coming up, all sorts of other holidays that some people celebrate are coming up. www.DavidPakman.com/gift. If you have, you know, if you have a liberal friend or family member, they're going to love the show, hopefully. And it's a perfect gift for that conservative wingnut uncle that needs to be brought over to the side of good.
Louis: Or if he just wants a couple of guys to rag on.
David: Exactly. Exactly.
Louis: Right?
David: Fair enough. In either case, it's the perfect gift for the conservative wingnut in your life, whether it's a family member or not. So www.DavidPakman.com/gift. You can give them a six-, 12-, or 24-month subscription. These things are flying off the shelves, Louis. We just started yesterday.
Louis: Good to know.
David: It's extraordinary. And speaking of, that's a real news story, us doing a gift subscription, that is hard news, and that is worthwhile. Not the same can be said about some of the stuff that's been running on Fox News recently. They're just running fake stories at this point. Did you hear about this?
Louis: Little bit.
David: Monday we talked about News Corporation funding North Korea. The other day, www.FoxNation.com reposted an anti-Obama article, and it's from "The Onion". Now, Louis, "The Onion", what is "The Onion"?
Louis: Satire.
David: It's made-up news.
Louis: Right.
David: Everybody knows that it's made-up news. And you don't even work at Fox News, and you know that. Fox News posts this, and they don't mention that it's a joke. And I actually have the... I have a screenshot here. The story was obviously taken down; I managed to take a screenshot while it was still up. And as you can see here, there is no indication that this is a fake story. Fox News posted an "Onion" story saying "Frustrated Obama Sends Nation Rambling 75,000-Word Email" as if it is a real news story. It's incredible, isn't it? And most people realize that "The Onion" is satire, it's made-up news, it's not real, news outlets should definitely know that, should they not?
Louis: They should research their stories a little more.
David: But who hasn't heard of "The Onion"? Forget about research, it's from "The Onion"!
Louis: Well, I can understand people not being familiar with "The Onion". It's not, I mean, it's...
David: If you work for Fox News, you know about "The Onion", Louis, trust me. It's one the... it's a highly...
Louis: So you're saying that they knowingly posted a fake story?
David: No, I'm saying that they should know, but apparently they did not. They reposted the first two paragraphs in their Culture section, no signs that it's fiction. At the bottom, it said, "Read the whole story at 'The Onion'." But again, you would have to know that "The Onion" is fiction. There wasn't any indication of it. People on www.FoxNation.com obviously just didn't get it. And people replying, people commenting on the story also didn't get it. If you're going to argue that everyone knows "The Onion" is fake, right, and Fox didn't need to put, "This is a fake story," you're wrong. And the comments show that.
I actually, let's... for example, "Hey, you fraud, get out! Your presidency is an affront to the exceptionalism of America. Pathetic loser." Another comment: "It's very concerning about his current state of mental health. I'm surprised he would be allowed to send something like this out." I had to scroll through literally 20 comments to find someone who said, "You guys know this is fake, right?" This is not a real story. What's going on over at www.FoxNation.com, Louis? News Corporation's funding North Korea to make apps for them, they're running "Onion" stories as real news. They ran a fake jetpack story a couple of months ago. There was a blatantly fake story about purchasing jetpacks for, I don't remember if it was for the military or for who. Fox ran it on TV as if it was a real story. It was completely bogus, just a made-up story.
Apparently, satire is dying, is it not? Or at least it is being lost on the news editors over at Fox News. Do you think they even have satire like in North Korea? Is that a concept they're familiar with there? Or in Iran? You think there's parody in Iran?
Louis: I think parody would probably be punished in North Korea.
David: Well, it's like, I guess in Japanese, supposedly there's no word for "meatball", I think I heard. I don't even know if that's true, but it's like in North Korea and Iran and on Fox News, there's no word for "satire". There's just not a word to convey what that is. It seems to be lost on them.
Louis: It's strange.
David: And now, also, I was watching today, they do this every year on Fox News, they run with the implications that global warming isn't an issue. We've heard these before from them. I have a couple of these clips. They talk about... anytime that it's cold somewhere in the winter, they point to that as evidence that there's not really global warming. OK, and obviously that's not working because my computer is not plugged in.
So today I turn it on, and all of a sudden they're doing a story about, it's freezing in Europe, Europe is in a deep freeze. It's cold in London, exceptionally cold. When did Fox News ever care about Europe? I mean, it has been the trademark of Fox News to talk about how bad France is and Europeans, we don't care about Europeans. All of a sudden, it's cold there in December, and it's big news, Louis.
Louis: I guess so.
David: Because of all the fake rumors about global warming. No mention, by the way, of the fact that it's December in Massachusetts, it was almost 60 degrees yesterday. No mention of that. But all of a sudden, Europe is on the forefront.
Louis: I guess the global warming thing is a completely different discussion, but it really annoys me when people who have no concept of what global warming is start to comment on it.
David: Right. The thing is, we could start going into, well, an observation based on a couple of years of it being cold or warm somewhere is not going to be an indication that it is climate change, we can't say that, so on and so forth, but it would be a pointless discussion, would it not be? I mean, it would essentially be lost on whoever it is that we're referring to, do you agree?
Louis: In all likeliness, yeah. I think so.
David: Yeah. And it's... We'll leave it at that, I guess.
