Bernie Sanders – Last Man Standing
During the days of Watergate, Professor Stephen Gaskin of San Francisco State, a Hippie pundit of that time, would expound on the southern virtues of Senator Sam Irwin who was the co-chair on the committee investigating the shenanigans of Nixon and his crew. Irwin, in the late days of his statesmanship, was so broad the cameras would have to pan back in order to get his entire frame into the parameters of a TV. The Senator would sit there day after day slowly untangling Nixon’s insanity and paranoia, and in his North Carolina southern drawl sanely weave the Watergate story to the America people.
Today we have a new elder statesman, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who captivated the C-Span audience and lit up Twitter. At the age of 69, and in his Brooklyn born accent, Sanders stood in the chambers of the Senate floor for eight and one half hours, without even taking time out for a pee, and exhorted on the failures of capitalism, the misdeed of greed and the use of usury in the destruction of the middle class and how we have etched deeper into a caste system.
One thing that bothered me during the Obama campaign was his purposeful effort to jump over the Vietnam era and wipe out that generation’s history. This was a generation that did more to save the spiritual vein of America than those of the Second World War. The media found it impossible to explain the spiritual aspects of the Hippies, so instead painted a vulgar caricature of the movement, when here was a generation, again using an analogy of Stephen Gaskins, that acted as the Jewish High Priest during the High Holy Days of ancient Israel. The priest would enter into the Holy of Holies, pull the long purple drapes closed and separate himself from the people, sometimes for weeks, similar to a Native American on a vision Quest. He would not come out until he heard the word of God or was touched by one of His angels, and only then would he step out to the people to say “Yes”. And it is told, the people would exhale in relief.
So today we have Bernie Sanders who has stood up for eight and one half hours and gave to the America people words of sanity and truth. The media will paint him as Trotsky, but all I can say is, God Bless you Bernie Sanders.
