Bail refused.

He was refused bail despite five wealthy supporters, including heiress Jemima Khan and writer John Pilger, offering £100,000 ($150,000) in assurance.

The Australian, who gave a Victoria address when asked in court, was whisked into the complex by an unmarked police car an hour earlier at about 1pm this afternoon.
He had walked into a London police station at 9.30am this morning and was immediately arrested over demands that he is sent to Sweden to face questioning over the rape allegations.
It comes after Scotland Yard officers finally took receipt of the correct paperwork for a European Arrest Warrant yesterday.

U.S. Defence Secretary Robert Gates today said the arrest 'sounds like good news' while Downing Street was more tempered, describing the incident as 'entirely a matter for police'.

WikiLeaks today said Mr Assange's arrest will not stop further U.S. diplomatic cables being released. A spokesman added: 'This will not change our operation.'

His lawyer Mark Stephens said: ‘Julian Assange has been the one in hot pursuit to vindicate himself to clear his good name.
‘He has been trying to meet with her (the Swedish prosecutor) to find out what the allegations are he has to face and also the evidence against him, which he still hasn't seen.’

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange arrested in London

The founder of the whistle-blowing website Wikileaks, Julian Assange, has been arrested by the Metropolitan Police.

The 39-year-old Australian denies allegations he sexually assaulted two women in Sweden.

Scotland Yard said Mr Assange was arrested on a European arrest warrant by appointment at a London police station at 0930 GMT.

He is due to appear at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court later.

3. Stinks? Please...
...he has fled to avoid prosecution, in and of itself is a criminal act which denotes consciousness of guilt. There is no way he's going to get bail. If the charges so minor and Assange so committed to truth, he should welcome his day in court.

5. He didn't hide from the police.
One of his lawyers stated that Scotland Yard knew where he was. He was hiding from would be assassins, most notably our guys.

7. There are no assassins...
...and if the government of the United States wanted him dead, he would be.

8. Look, Assange has been threatened and there have been public
remarks to hunt him down! It has even been threatened that his son be kidnapped to get to him. The U.S. powers that be would love him out of the picture but I suppose he's made himself public enough that would be difficult...not to say it couldn't still happen. If you are so naive as to think that the U.S. hasn't pressured both Sweden and Interpol, I find that stunning especially considering Sweden's cooperation in the past. The UK may actually be protecting Assange but more likely doing what they've been told as we know they do. He's not a flight risk....he needs to stay public just as he has been doing. imho

9. You should note that the Stockholm chief prosecutor threw out
the case when getting information about the evidence and charges made against Assange. Only when they could find a prosecutor more sensitive to the political side of things did things start moving.

Also note that the "rape charge" is a misnomer for a case about malicious intent regarding a broken condom used for consensual sex between adults.

10. Would you welcome your day in court....
if every government wanted you wiped out? Would you have been thrilled to stand before the inquisition, or the Salem witch trials, or the McCarthy hearings, secure in your innocence?

... before they find him dead in his jail cell.

Our Govt certainly does not want the truth about the WOT or our current economic depression to be revealed.
