As the U.S. Department of Justice considers charging WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange under the Espionage Act of 1917, we speak with Robert Meeropol, the son of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg—the only U.S. citizens to be executed under the Espionage Act, in what’s been described as the most controversial death sentence in U.S. history. This week, Meeropol released a widely read statement in support of WikiLeaks called, "My Parents Were Executed Under the Unconstitutional Espionage Act—Here’s Why We Must Fight to Protect Julian Assange."

My Parents Were Executed Under the Unconstitutional Espionage Act -- Here's Why We Must Fight to Protect Julian Assange
The Espionage Act is a huge danger to our open society; it's been used to send hundreds of dissenters to jail just for voicing their opinions, transforming dissent into treason.

1. The Rosenbergs young son grew up to be a remarkably articulate man.
It pains me to know how intelligent he is, and how he understands how devious the workings were that were put into play to murder his parents.

If they don't see you, and you don't know why... Who is this song too? Is it for a current time frame, or for some future point?

Got the 123 in it also.

And the censorship.

Sugar Sweet.

7. Biden's "high-tech terrorist" comment is sickening...and predictable.
Edited on Fri Dec-31-10 07:26 PM by Ken Burch
Phil Ochs could get write a verse about the guy:

"I read all the Pentagon Papers
Daniel Ellsberg was sort of my guy.
I halfheartedly backed George McGovern
While I wished the peace movement would die.
Now I want Wikileakers in prison
Here's to torture, and phonetaps, and spies!
So love me, love me love me, I'm a liberal".

8. Act to Protect Our Freedoms from Corporate Congress
Let's reform the campaign finance system so corporate money,
corporate media bias, and corporate corruption of vote
getting and vote counting are nullified. Here's a petition
for that:

9. What is shocking to me
....is that two traitors to America (yes, former Soviet officials and documents confirmed their guilt) are still heroes to some on the left. Confirming the worst suspicions of the right. That all progressives want to overthrow America and institute socialism or communism. I am one liberal Democrat that loves America and I cheer when traitors like the Rosenbergs are caught and executed. The only injustice is that all of their group was not killed as well.

10. I don't cheer when people are executed
I'm not in favor of the death penalty but the Rosenbergs were shown to be traitors to the US

they deserved to be imprisoned at the least

you'll find way too many posters on here who find traitors like the Rosenbergs heroes

they're the same ones who think Castro and his ilk can do no wrong either

11. The Rosenbergs didn't do anything all THAT bad
Edited on Fri Dec-31-10 10:49 PM by Ken Burch
(btw, Ethel wasn't guilty of anything at all, OTHER than being a Communist and Jewish. Those were the reasons she was murdered.)

Julius gave some info to the Soviets, but nothing that mattered. It was Klaus Fuchs that gave the Soviets the hydrogen bomb, and they'd have figured it out soon anyway.

The Soviets almost never used actual CPUSA members for espionage-their preference was apolitical opportunist types who were just in it for the money.

The CPUSA was wrong to stay allied with Stalin in the 1940's but there was never any chance whatsoever that the U.S. was going to face a "Communist takeover". The whole Red Scare was nothing but unjustified paranoia.

Finally, as to Fidel...nobody here thinks's he's a saint...it's just that it goes without saying that no good would come to the people of Cuba if the Miami exiles came back to power. And putting them back in charge in Havana is the ONLY outcome any U.S. administration will ever permit. There will never be a left-of-center non-Communist Cuban goverment allowed.

That's what it's about, dave.

12. The Rosenbergs weren't traitors
Edited on Fri Dec-31-10 10:48 PM by Ken Burch
They gave the Soviets information(and nothing that really mattered, btw), because they didn't want the U.S. to be the world's ONLY superpower. Yes, Stalin was evil, but given how our country's leaders have behaved since 1991, can you BLAME them for not wanting U.S. hegemony to be utterly unchallenged?

This country cannot have uncontested global dominance and still have ANY progressive values. No empire ever does.

If you really love your country, don't WISH dreams of imperial grandeur upon it. Nothing good ever comes of such dreams.

BTW...you CAN'T be a liberal and cheer when anyone is executed. To cheer an execution is to be devoid of humanity.

Get therapy. Now.

facts from sources (under an ethics code, with verified and several sources), but to equate this freedom in democracy to what the Rosenbergs did is unconscionable.

The Rosenbergs, and anyone else, were free to believe in whatever they wanted. They were convicted because of actions proven in a court of law, weren't they?

I am first and foremost a human being, then an American. My mind is not available to be tilted toward anything that is traitorous because it is the flavor of the month.

And why am I writing ANYTHING on a computer just minutes before the start of the New Year and the Times Square dropping of the ball? My compulsion caused me to check on something on the computer, and I got carried away, obviously. I'm going to make a drink and celebrate the New Year coming in, and leave this *#!#! computer behind!
