The White House is running into
outrage from conservatives in response to inviting the rapper Common to its
poetry night that takes place tonight. Common is among other performing guests such as Aimee Mann, Jill Scott, and Elizabeth Alexander.
Conservatives cite this appearance by Common on the HBO series
Def Poetry Jam in 2005 as why it's wrong for Common to appear. The poem is as follows, and I provided links to clarify Common's references to rappers that some of you might not know. They cite lines such as "burn a Bush" and "I got the black strap to make the cop run"...because conservatives never have made violent references to Obama or anti-government rhetoric (just ask the Tea Party or search Free Republic.) Literary devices clearly go over the head of some people (who consider Fox News and Christian Daystar networks whatever they are as "quality" or are
Masterpiece Theatre elitist), so events like the Poetry Night are important.
