(Transcript) Judy Woodruff sat down with Texas Rep. Ron Paul Wednesday to discuss his campaign for the GOP presidential nomination and the ongoing debt-ceiling negotiations. The interview is the first in a series of conversations with GOP contenders seeking to take on President Obama in the 2012 election.

Paul began: "I want to bring all the troops home. When it comes to personal liberties and what's going on at our airports, I don't like the Patriot Act, and they (most Republican candidates) tend to support the Patriot Act. When it comes to monetary policy, they try to avoid it , yet money is one-half of all our transactions. We're in a mess; so I concentrate a whole lot on the Federal Reserve and monetary policy. And of course, the spending is big issue with me, but it's been that way for a long time."

On Congress and the debt: "...they don't understand economic policy because they're afraid of a default, and they've been frightened. But this is the way so often government works. They try to frighten the people, such as frighten people about being attacked by nuclear weapons that don't exist so we go to war needlessly. But the bailout - frighten the people so you bail out everybody, and forget about the people who are losing their houses. So, yes, there's a lot of that."

On the military: "They hurt us and they hurt our national defense. And we can save hundreds of billions of dollars when you add up all the militarism and all the foreign aid and all the mischief we create, why do we have troops in Korea and Japan - all these things. So you could save a lot. That wouldn't be enough."

On Medicare and Social Security (get ready to puke): "I would like to offer young people going into the workforce the chance to opt out, opt out of Social Security. But that won't work unless you do these cuts I'm talking about, the militarism as well as all these departments that make no sense at all...there's two groups: One group wants to - won't cut a nickel out of the military and the other won't cut a nickel out of entitlement system...I would want people to have medical-savings accounts. Young people should be able to opt out and build up a medical savings account and take care of their own programs."

My comments: As right-wing as he is, Paul is very few in Washington who dare to attack Big Military and corporate welfare.

1. Ron Paul is a racist douchebag
I really don't give a fuck what he has to say. Un-rec for airing his comments.

4. He wants to
stop all wars, including the 'war' on drugs.

I'm not saying I am a supporter of Ron Paul. I AM saying he has important things to say.

18. He's a racist.
I could pull out the old "Hitler loved dogs" chestnut, but that's tiresome, too.

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. He has nothing important to say--anyone who gives that intolerant asswipe a moment of their time is wasting time they'll never get back for useful endeavors.

I have no tolerance for racists, and I don't think enabling them or giving them any sort of platform is a big D Democratic ideal.

"I don't need to hear a racist douchebag tell me things I already know."

Fuck him, IMO he should not be allowed to have a voice here and it disgusts me to no end that people will give him props for the few things he is right about when he is wrong about so much. Fuck him.

14. i don't fear racists- i deplore and fight them.

racists like Paul and Duke say lots of pretty things that people want to hear. like referring to the KKK as a "gentlemans club".

i know why people are so fearful- so they can have that fear exploited by the likes of Ron Paul, David Duke, FOX and the GOP (having them uneducated helps a lot in that regard, as well).

10. Well...
It is Ron Paul's racist ideas... His misogynistic ideas... His isolationist ideas... His moronic financial ideas that determine just how big of a douchebag he is. If you want to listen to that assholes ideas just because he agrees with you on an issue or two, go ahead. I say fuck him, he has nothing I want to hear.

15. I want
an end to wars. All of them. I want the looting to stop. I've never seen or heard anything racist coming from him. If you have such, show me.

You know, about 'racists' .. it really messes things up when people accuse others of 'racism'. Know why? Because I have known REAL live racists. They do not disguise their feelings. There is no way to mistake their position. They are RACIST! They don't even deny it!

Stop trying to pin the label on people on whom it does not belong. There are plenty of the real ones out there to fill the quota.

20. Thank you
I admit that is troubling. I've never seen those. Further investigation is needed for ME to accept it, however.

Ironically, if the wars end (and looting stops), not only WHITE people, but blacks, Arabs, etc. will have a much better lot! Right now
NATO is bombing BLACK people in Libya!

Stop the wars. I don't care who does it. We will all win, regardless of race, creed or color.

21. Ron Paul uses common sense
which, I know, is TOTALLY RADICAL in this country... And I've never heard him say anything racist, his famous opposition to the Civil Rights Act has to do with government forcing businesses to be politically correct, rather than letting them fail on their own... someone here has been watching too much Fox News...
He definitely has MANY ideas that many Democrats would do well to listen to...namely ENDING THE (PRIVATE) FEDERAL RESERVE BANK stranglehold on our economy, ENDING THE WARS, including the totally counterproductive "war on drugs" (the US leads the world in drug use) etc. etc.
That doesn't mean he should become the KING of our country... or that he's right about everything he thinks
Thank you Ron Paul, for having the BALLS to speak the truth the way you see it,and not being another corporate owned Republicrat...

8. Dennis Kucinich
Kucinich wants to end the wars too. The difference is Kucinich won't destroy entitlement programs for the poor the elderly the sick and the children. It would be a better America with Kucinich than with Ron Paul.

11. He's absolutely right about the military and the influence
of Corporations on this country. And he's not wrong that if the government would stop bailing out failed corps, that in itself would regulate them.

But like most Libertarians he cannot explain how without taxes, a country can take care of some basic needs like its poor and elderly and and infrastructure. Still, our of all the Repub candidates, he is the most sane so I hope he wins their nomination, although I doubt it.

12. Obama could survive 2012 if there's a split in the conservative ticket
like in 1992 and 1996 how the Republican candidate had in both years to compete with Ross Perot, who dared speak out against NAFTA ("giant sucking sound of jobs going to Mexico" something along that line). So I would encourage Ron Paul to run in 2012 as an independent, would you?

16. Well.
We won't have to wait that long! We're facing default and/or a full government break down very very soon.

I wonder how many people at DU will listen to what IS going on on the other side? Nothing scares me. I will take a look at anything ONCE.

ergo: My quote above. INVESTIGATE! There is absolutely no harm in looking at the boogie guys.
