Prof. Steven Pinker of Harvard gave a thought-provoking talk at the Linda Hall Library here in KC. His thesis is counter-intuitive to anyone watching the 24hr news cycle: Prof. Pinker asserts that violence is actually on the decline and that decline is continuing into the 21st Century.

6. I love this guy-

he really elevates the topics and is quite clear-headed. No strident messages, no hyperbole. I have read his "The Stuff of Thought" and "How the Mind Works"--we need more of him.
