AKA: A cautionary tale in which Youtube censors dispute my video while disparaging women!
So I stumbled onto this very hip, cool song a few weeks ago. It's brand new and has been racing up the top ten of Billboard's Dance Music charts for weeks now. I'd never think of trying to make a video for it . . . except for two things: 1) The lyrics and mood work perfectly for the OWS Movement! The song repeats, "there's a change comin' in the air." It may not have been intended as a protest song, but it works SO well that way, that I think it could easily be co-opted by the movement and turn what was just a dance smash into an international phenomenon, if enough people heard it. 2) The current "official" video for the song totally SUCKS! It's nothing but images of clouds and the words of the song floating on them. Gee, they had an "official" video budget and couldn't come up with a better idea than that?
So I made a video, submitted it and to not much surprise, immediately it was censored due to copyright issues. I knew that if I could find someone's home-made remix, and if it didn't suck, I could download the song, make a video and post it, using the remix. Voila, no copyright problems unless the remixer was an idiot. Now here comes the bizarre part. If you search for the song "In The Air" by Morgan Page on Youtube, on the very first page of results you will see one that looks like a penis (it is really the backside of a woman with her legs curled up), upon which is written the words "Women are dicks!" I kid you not, and this video has over 2,000 hits but no one has commented on the fact that the video is disparaging to women. BUT IT JUST SO HAPPENED THAT THIS REMIX WAS QUITE GOOD!
So I downloaded the remix, made my own video, uploaded it and, to my utter shock and dismay, the Youtube censors immediately claimed copyright violation! So I am disputing it, which is why you are still able to watch this video now. The amazing part of this story, if you haven't noticed is, HOW did the IDIOT with the video making disparaging comments to women get his video approved and I can't get this one approved, which offends NO ONE except possibly the one percent???
Anyway, watch it while you can. I'm not hoping to cash in on this. I'm sure there are folks out there who are way more talented than I, who could take this idea further than I did. But I did manage to get a lot of the ideas of the OWS movement, as well as some of the memorable images to come out of the protests so far. It is my hope and primary purpose in assembling this slideshow that it encourages more participation in the OWS movement.
