I watched the entire video, which is

The point of the speech is especially poignant--that is, that his audience (all cancer survivors) have been given the gift of life, and with that gift comes the responsibility to do what we can to effect changes that will reduce the occurence of cancer.
So you want to know what motivates this man? Why caring for the environment is so important to him? Why universal healthcare is a non-negotiable for him? Watch the video. It's incredibly moving.
And I was also struck by how utterly real Mr. Kerry is. These celebrities like MJ Fox and public leaders like Kerry always seem so much larger than life. But when they show us what's going on inside, and the struggles they are facing, I realize again that they are not so different from me. They have the same emotions, the same fears, the same types of struggles.
That gives me a lot of hope. If someone like John Kerry can walk through the darkness of cancer and come out with his faith intact and even be stronger than he was before, if he can learn and grow and change...then so can I. Even if my struggle is different, the humanity we share is the same. And that's a real encouragement.
Thank you, Mr. Kerry.
