This is what we've been telling Bushies for over four years.

This is for all the Republicans that argue Saddam MUST of had WMD's because of "all the games he played with inspectors", and "if he didn't have them, why not just let the inspectors in?"

An FBI agent that befriended Saddam after his capture gained his trust, during which he revealed (among other things) that if the Americans thought he had WMD's, Iran would too, thereby warding off attack.

Also consider the unspoken point on the worthlessness of torture. Befriending Saddam and gaining his trust provided more insight and a willingness to talk than torture ever could have.

1. That's O.K., Saddam, George lied about them too...

On edit: I don't believe this bullshit for a moment. I don't believe a tin-horn dictator like Saddam could pull some half-assed con like this one and fool the United States' 15 intelligence agencies,* unless, of course, they wanted "to be fooled..."

3. It was quite obvious that with the No-Fly Zones
and constant eye-in-the-sky satellites peering down on Saddam's movements, Iraq couldn't have anything of consequence to the safety of the U.S. or close-by neighbors.

The whole run-up to the Bush/Cheney invasion of Iraq smelled of fabrication all the way. It's pathetic that we have such an ignorant republic/conservative/neocon voting population that it out-weighed common sense and supported the liar-in-chief.

4. Great post!
This was a very good piece. As mentioned by the OP, this is important because it shows the benefit of using intelligence rather than force. Also, I thought that it humanized Saddam in a way that most short news stories do not. Heh, I found myself almost tearing up at the part about Saddam being given the suit by the American.

6. Agree with the points about not using torture, but a few things about
this seem suspect to me. First, this let's bushler off the hook about wmd lies, inferring that saddam tricked him into believing in wmd. Second, it seems to enforce the neocon idea that Iran is a massive threat that needs bombing. The timing and motives of this release seems suspect to me.

7. You have me joining you on that.
This type of stuff doesn't get released or promoted unless it serves the greater purpose of their agenda.

That's how they operate - we've seen it for decades now.

9. I think you're reading too much into it.
The WH didn't release this news, it's contained in a new book that's coming out.

If anything, the fact Iran feared Saddam and the Bush Administration removed the only check on Iran they had in the Middle East doesn't make the Bush Administration look good, nor does it support the case for attacking yet another country that would never had been necessary had they not of attacked Iraq in the first place.

12. Nothing about any of it makes bushler look good, but just because
this came out in someone's book instead of a press release doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't done on their behalf. They're kinda tricksy. Anyway, I'm just sayin it started me thinking. Anything that has anything at all to do with these criminals deserves a fair amount of scrutiny and skepticism with an eye toward conspiracy. All in all, the true scope of the stuff they've pulled will turn out to be even worse than what we now know.

The Word WMD was enoght so scare the USA, the world one Superpower to its knees, and this Administration was scaret to the little green men, to wage a war on false premises, and lying to the whole world, before and after the war..

And this Administration have given USA the same repotation as Sudan, Yemen and North Korea and its like.. Exelent work:sarcasm:

By hey, you stil have "the worlds savor" there in the White House, with the "grown ups" as they once called themself... Now they have a lot of words to describe this Administration, but the word Grown ups are not one of them:sarcasm:

13. why not just let the inspectors in?
In fact, Sadam did let inspectors in (I know you're just giving examples of RW talking points - it's those points I'm responding to). As a matter of fact, not only did he let them in, they got access we would never dream of allowing international inspectors in our military facilities (this even though it was an open secret that there were US operatives among the inspectors).

It was Bush that forced the inspectors out of Iraq, so he could begin his bombing campaign.

Not the main point of your post, I know, but a point I'd hate to see lost to the collective memory.

Thanks for sharing this, and your excellent point about using the "carrot" rather than just the stick, when seeking information.

15. Not only that, but he had to pretend to have them to scare off his own people.
No uprising from the oppressed people if they think you can gass them like he did with the Kurds in '91.
