A 1966 political tune from the late, great Frank Zappa:

Hungry Freaks, Daddy

Mr. America, walk on by your schools that do not teach
Mr. America, walk on by the minds that won't be reached
Mr. America try to hide the emptiness that's you inside
But once you find that the way you lied
And all the corny tricks you tried
Will not forestall the rising tide of HUNGRY FREAKS DADDY!

They won't go to war no more
Great mid-western hardware store
Philosophy that turns away
From those who aren't afraid to say what's on their minds
The left behinds of the great society

HUNGRY FREAKS, DADDY!

Mr. America, walk on by your supermarket dream
Mr. America, walk on by the liquor store supreme
Mr. America try to hide the product of your savage pride
The useful minds that it denied
The day you shrugged and stepped aside
You saw their clothes, and then you cried,
"Those HUNGRY FREAKS, DADDY!"

They won't go to war no more
Great mid-western hardware store
Philosophy that turns away
From those who aren't afraid to say what's on their minds
The left behinds of the great society

1. Thank you,. You made my morning,
Heck, you made my whole week.

I lost that album when my apartment flooded, it was one of the first albums I ever bought. I used to plant my head between the speakers and listen to it for hours. Maybe that's why I have hearing loss.

2. Great song, Great Album
Freak Out has always been one of my favorites. Love the guitar solo in this one.

3. It was strangely... hopeful, wasn't it?
Loved the song, loved the solo, loved the double-lp. Haven't heard it in forever.

4. The liner notes were great
one of the things I really miss about LP's, that and the artwork. I remember for this song it said something about skipping the prom and going to the library and educating yourself instead.

5. Here it is
Drop out of school before your mind rots from exposure to
our mundane educational system. Forget about the Senior
Prom and go to the library and *educate yourself* if you've
got any guts. Some of you like *pep rallies* and plastic
robots who tell you what to read. Forget I mentioned it.
*This song has no message.* Rise for the flag salute.

6. Thanks for finding that, for better or worse it changed my life
I never said the pledge after reading that, though I was only in 6th or 7th grade when I got hold of the album. My parents were supportive if not totally happy with my stance. I also didn't go to my senior prom, though I did spend the night on manasquan beach with a Basque foregn exchange student learning things I'd never have found out about in the library :-)
