You try to educate people who are wrong and explain your position but to get "cheerleader" and "kool aide" and all of that garbage back makes you not want to engage. So, fine, I kept up for a while, but it's the same bad arguments over and over again coming back. Who has time for that?

I'm really bad a sports metaphors (I didn't know who Curt Shilling was before yesterday) so if I mess this up, be kind.

Progress takes time. I read a review of Gail Collins book on women's rights over the last 50 years and reflected on how far we've come from where our mothers were (my mom's 85). It seems so obvious to me (us) now that women should be treated equally and the world did not fall apart when women started working in "real" jobs. (I'm a lawyer, one of the first 100 women admitted to the bar in the history of my state!)

My mom, on the other hand, really didn't have the options I did. It was much harder for her.

There are no hail Mary passes in real life.

Or at least, not all progress comes that way.

Think about this: In 1964 it was illegal for doctors in Conn. and many other states to talk to their female patients about birth control.

1964. And it was illegal in many states in 1967 for a white to marry a black.

Baby steps.

We have to be impatient but not angry. Keep moving but expect setbacks and for it to be slow. In 50 years we'll look back and recognize how far Obama moved the ball. How far we all moved the ball.
