Hell has frozen over
Edited on Wed Jun-06-07 09:38 AM by shrike
Ann Coulter called Bush "stupid" in her latest column.

Of course, it all has to do with the racist badgering of hard right-wingers who don't want brown people in this country. Ergo, the column is loathsome, as usual, but I thought a few here might want to witness the crust of ice on hell.

Americans — at least really stupid Americans like George Bush — believe the natural state of the world is to have individual self-determination, human rights, the rule of law and a robust democratic economy. On this view, most of the existing world and almost all of world history is a freakish aberration.

snip

At the precise moment in history when the U.S. has abandoned any attempt to transmit Anglo-Saxon virtues to its own citizens, much less to immigrants, George Bush wants to grant citizenship to hordes of immigrants who are here precisely because they are fleeing cultures that are utterly dysfunctional and ruinous for the humans who live in them.

Yes, this country has absorbed huge migrations of illiterate peasants in the past — notably Italian immigrants at the turn of the last century. But also notably, half of them went back. We got the good ones. (LIKE MOBSTERS?) America was not yet a welfare state guaranteeing room and board to the luckless, the lazy and the incompetent from cradle to grave.

6. I like the sentiment, but I don't think shit would kill Ann Coulter
If that were possible she'd have died long ago, I suspect.

2. Several years from now...

Boy that will be sweet.

4. You won't bump into her
unless she's a guard - then she'll have you shot for bumping into her.

She's a good little Aryan nazi. Anglo-Saxon virtues? I guss those would be puritanism, calvinist selfishness, rascism, and imperialism - all traits that Anglo-Saxons (=Aryans) have exported around the world for the past few hundred years.

5. Your comment about mobsters is completely uncalled for.

I am a proud Sicilian-American, and neither I nor my family are involved in criminal operations. I would rate it as worse than anything Ann Coulter put in her column.

7. Thanks, LoZoccolo. I'm sick of the same prejudice myself
Comment should be rescinded.

Coulter is scum of the earth.

13. It does not appear in the Coulter column.
I would have gone after her if that were the case.

19. Didn't mean to offend anyone
Just that she delineated "good" and "bad," and who stayed for what reason.

There's always a small, criminal element among new immigrants (think Russian mob, Asian gangs, etc.) I would argue that in some ways the American system probably rewards these criminal elements more than the "good" immigrants Coulter thinks she is praising.

8. John Stewart mentioned this last night...
The conservative base is jumping off the Bush train due to his shockingly unrepug stance on immigration.

9. My grandparents were some of the illiterate peasant Italians that came at the turn of the century.
They settled in Pittsburgh and had a small grocery business. Pretty good for some illiterate peasants.

17. "But also notably, half of them went back. We got the good ones."
Sure about that, Anne? It seems to me that those who came here to make money for their families at home, then made their money and WENT home must have been the successful ones. Successful enough to leave the opportunities offered here and pay for passage back to Europe.

Those who stayed were either people who WANTED to become Americans, or who were unsuccessful enough that they couldn't afford to go home. And that is where you have the split between the good majority and the criminal minority that preyed on them - just as we see with the current immigrants.

I'd wager that half the immigrants from south of the border would return to their native countries if the economic and political ills were stabilized. Half would remain, to become American citizens. And a fraction will become criminals, who prey on the immigrant communities.

It is not their culture that is dysfunctional - it's their economics, which is largly due to US imperialism. As long as our government supports the oligarchies, we will have people coming here fleeing the system we support.

Edited on Wed Jun-06-07 11:17 AM by librechik
If only he had stuck to Real Conservative Principles he not only wouldn't be stupid, he wouldn't have failed.

(great excuse, huh? get ready to hear it 24/7 for the next 18 months.)
