Iraq parliament to determine fate of foreign troops, demands compensation
Submitted by Voice of Iraq on Wed, 2007-06-06 08:35.Asia | Iraq | News

Iraqi government would now require parliamentary approval to extend the UN mandate for foreign troops in Iraq when it expires at the end of 2007 under the terms of a resolution passed 85-49 by Iraq's House of Representatives today where legislators also tabled a draft bill demanding compensation for the people affected by military actions.

The drafters and main proponents of the bill are the 30 parliamentarians loyal to Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

"The vote took place after having collected 140 signatures from deputies in the House of Representatives for the draft submitted by al-Sadr's bloc in the House which gives the Parliament the final say in whether or not multinational troops should stay in Iraq," a spokesperson for Speaker Mahmoud Almchidani told reporters.

This move goes against Bush administration's recently announced plans to establish a Korea-style long term military bases in Iraq.

The House of Representatives will also vote on a draft bill on compensation for those affected by the military operations and errors committed by armed forces, a move that has angered the US Commanders in Iraq.
