Bush Sabotaged the Immigration Bill.
Face it, it was all lip service. He had to get out from under the pressure that he was under from his base, so what dies he do? he sabotages it. check it out...

Bush, trying to overcome that antagonism, has stepped up efforts to reach out to lawmakers and business and immigrant groups. The bill is a fragile compromise negotiated by a group of Democratic and Republican senators and the White House.

But in comments to business and immigrant groups on Tuesday, Bush raised a few eyebrows with a gaffe that suggested the bill he supports includes a form of amnesty.

"Amnesty means that you've got to pay a price for having been here illegally, and this bill does that," Bush said.

The White House quickly took the rare step of issuing a statement saying that Bush "misspoke" and that his comment was "the exact opposite of the president's long-held and often-stated position."

1. I doubt that was intentional - it was simply Bush's inability to speak English.
I don't care either way, though, as long as that monstrosity of a bill is dead.

2. I don't think so; passage of this would have legitimized his 'legacy', or
so he thought. I think it's a body blow for him.

3. how does one make a statement that is...
"the exact opposite of the president's long-held and often-stated position."?

regarding his legacy, do you honestly think the passing of this bill would overshadow Iraq? How does one solidify a legacy by alienating ones base?

4. My suggestion for immigration
Compel those illegals who want to become citizens, to register. Give them rules and regulations. And set a schedule to verify how long they have been here. When they have met all the conditions then we could go about having them apply for citizenship. If we find someone not signed up, send them home to Mexico or where ever they came from. Simple as that.

7. If we were capable of half of that and were willing to enforce laws,
we wouldn't have the problem to begin with.
