38. Your logical fallacy doesn't make any sense. It's also a smear.
SALINAS: You're talking about Mexico. That means that you are against immigrants from Mexico.

DOBBS: I'm not against immigrants from Mexico. I'm not against immigrants from any part of the world. Point of fact, I embrace immigrants. The fact of the matter is, I love Mexico. I am against illegal immigration. I am against continuing the sham that is homeland security in which our ports are not secured, our borders are not secured. I think that this government should be held accountable.

32. Voila
He falsely said Mexicans are responsible for an outbreak of leprosy:

“The invasion of illegal aliens is threatening the health of many Americans,” Mr. Dobbs said on his April 14, 2005, program. From there, he introduced his original report that mentioned leprosy, the flesh-destroying disease — technically known as Hansen’s disease — that has inspired fear for centuries.

According to a woman CNN identified as a medical lawyer named Dr. Madeleine Cosman, leprosy was on the march. As Ms. Romans, the CNN correspondent, relayed: “There were about 900 cases of leprosy for 40 years. There have been 7,000 in the past three years.”

“Incredible,” Mr. Dobbs replied."

.....

To sort through all this, I called James L. Krahenbuhl, the director of the National Hansen’s Disease Program, an arm of the federal government. Leprosy in the United States is indeed largely a disease of immigrants who have come from Asia and Latin America. And the official leprosy statistics do show about 7,000 diagnosed cases — but that’s over the last 30 years, not the last three.

The peak year was 1983, when there were 456 cases. After that, reported cases dropped steadily, falling to just 76 in 2000. Last year, there were 137.

36. Oh, good. The David Leonhardt article.
Edited on Mon Jul-16-07 07:41 PM by brentspeak
After reading Leonhardt's article the morning it was published, I personally emailed Leonhardt, pointing out how he got his facts wrong:

My email to David Leonhardt:

You wrote:

> For one thing, Mr. Dobbs has a somewhat flexible relationship with reality. He has said http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0311/04/ldt.00.html, for example, that one-third of the inmates in the federal prison system are illegal immigrants. That’s wrong, too. According to the Justice Department http://ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/pdf/pjim05.pdf, 6 percent of prisoners in this country are noncitizens (compared with 7 percent of the population). For a variety of reasons, the crime rate is actually lower http://ideas.repec.org/p/fip/fedhwp/wp-05-19.html among immigrants than natives.

Dobbs, as you mentioned, was talking about the number of illegal immigrants in federal prisons. But the Justice Department figures of "6 percent of prisoners" which you quoted refer to illegal immigrants serving time in both federal and state prisons. If you had read the entire report, you would have come across this:

> At midyear 2005, 35,285 Federal
> inmates were noncitizens,
> representing about 19% of all
> prisoners in Federal custody.

"Federal", as not 'federal + state.'

So, on the percentage of illegal aliens residing in federal prisons, it appears both Dobbs and yourself don't seem to have the facts straight.

Sincerely...

Leonhardt's response to me :

37. More

As FAIR has noted in the past, Dobbs' tone on immigration is consistently alarmist; he warns his viewers (3/31/06) of Mexican immigrants who see themselves as an "army of invaders" intent upon reannexing parts of the Southwestern U.S. to Mexico, announces (11/19/03) that "illegal alien smugglers and drug traffickers are on the verge of ruining some of our national treasures," and declares (4/14/05) that "the invasion of illegal aliens is threatening the health of many Americans" through "deadly imports" of diseases like leprosy and malaria. And Dobbs makes no effort to provide a nuanced or balanced picture of the issue; as he told CNN Reliable Sources host Howard Kurtz (4/2/06): "I'm not interested—are you interested in six or seven views, or are you interested in the truth? Because that's what I'm interested in; that's what my viewers are interested in."
