By Jonathan Allen, CQ Staff
Stephen Colbert offered House Speaker Nancy Pelosi a blanket apology in a Capitol hallway Friday, then asked, without success, for the California Democrat to beg his forgiveness.
“I want to apologize for some of the things I’ve said {about you} on the show,” said Colbert, who hosts the news parody program “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central. Then he asked her, “Would you like to apologize to me? . . . If you ask for my forgiveness, it might lead to some healing.”
Pelosi declined. Indeed, she was not sure for what she would apologize.
After all, it was Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel of Illinois who advised Democratic lawmakers not to appear on Colbert’s show because Colbert revels in embarrassing his guests.
For example, Colbert asked Robert Wexler to finish the sentence, “I enjoy cocaine because . . . .” The Florida Democrat played along with the joke — perhaps too much so — by replying, “I enjoy cocaine because it’s a fun thing to do.”
Pelosi’s arranged meeting with the political satirist came as she walked to a House vote July 27.
“Welcome to the Capitol,” she said by way of greeting.
Colbert, always a little edgy, told her she looked good. The Speaker did agree to one Colbert request, however. She signed a cast he had on his left arm.
