1. It might be of some small comfort-or not-

to keep in mind that cheney is actually, really trying to do what he thinks is best for the country. He does not see himself as evil or missing something having to do with humanity; nor does he see himself as incompetent in international relations.

More likely he sees himself as a sort of hero, an unsung, misunderstood hero.

Having done some work with criminals and prisoners, I have found that even serial rapists and murderers don't really see themselves as vile, evil, horrible people.
Rather, they see themselves as victims or even heroes in their little private documentary of themselves.
