139. Today in Pittsburgh (Thur) low 90's
But we got our ass kicked by 3 waves of storms. First ones were early morning with some nasty flooding and lightning strikes. Second wave came in early afternoon with wind damage and more flooding. Third wave rolled through early evening. Some of the worst storms I've ever seen in Pittsburgh in 50+ years.

97-98 and we get use to frying our huevos on the sidewalks here this time of year. The humidity is suppose to make it feel like 105.

And to think the rich and famous pay good money for the sauna treatments we get daily. bada bing

This is one of the few places you can have 100% humidity and it NOT be raining.bada boom

62. Strangely, this is some of our first hot weather.
It's been raining most of the summer, which is very unusual. We've had a lot of days in the 80s, while the average high for this time of year is about 95.

Looks like that's over, though!

The rains have kept it nice, August is suppose to be the hottest month after all. Wonder how that bodes for Hurricane season now that the Gulf is heating up.

87. Good question.
Considering how much of our moisture came straight from the Gulf, I'm surprised that there hasn't been more tropical development.

105. I don't know how long you have been hurricane watching...
as everyone around here does-but wasn't last year bizarre. The one hurricane we had threatening to come into the Gulf literally had it's top blown off by the upper wind currents. I have lived on the Gulf for years and that was a first for me. If weather patterns hold and we make it through to October-we are pretty safe. I hate to see the waters warm up like that. As much as I hate to admit it-hurricanes are essential for diffusing the heat and keeping the water tolerable for marine life. Yin and yang I suppose.

53. From Wikipedia - heat index :
At high temperatures, the level of relative humidity needed to make the Heat Index higher than the actual temperature is lower than at cooler temperatures. For example, at 80 °F (approximately 27 °C), the heat index will agree with the actual temperature if the relative humidity is 45%, but at 110 °F (roughly 43 °C), any relative-humidity reading above 17% will make the Heat Index higher than 110 °F. Humidity is deemed not to raise the apparent temperature at all if the actual temperature is below approximately 68 °F (20 °C) — essentially the same temperature colder than which wind chill is thought to commence. It should be noted that humidex and heat indexes are based on temperature measurements taken in the shade and not the sun, so extra care must be taken while in the sun.

20. Wow on some of the temps across the country!
It's going to be a high of 105 degrees in Palm Desert today and it looks like cities in the mid-West and the South are competing with temps in the Calif desert...PLUS those non-desert areas have the humidity to contend with on top of the heat.

I hope everyone stays cool and safe in this heat wave...and thank gawd I live by the beach! I don't know how I could handle some of the weather that is going on elsewhere right now.

49. In Seattle, 63 degrees F, cloudy with occasional drizzle
The planet is currently in an El Nino weather pattern, meaning that the Pacific Northwest is much more likely to get the low pressure systems which are typical of spring and autumn. These pull in cooler, wetter air off of the north Pacific and result in cool, wet weather. During normal and La Nina years, we get high pressure systems which pull hotter, drier air from the east, leading to very clear skies and temperatures between the upper 70s and low 90s.

It sucks to be you guys :hi: but I'd rather be elsewhere during La Nina years, believe me.

Edited on Wed Aug-08-07 12:51 PM by EnviroBat
Too hot to even ride the motorcycle this week. Like riding on a furnace with a desert wind blowing in your face. "But, but nothing to see here, the climate is fine. Don't worry. Global warming is a myth..."

Going outside is very pleasant in the micro-climate near the ocean in southern Calilfornia. However, once you get into a car and try to drive anywhere in this ant hill, it quickly becomes Hell on Earth.

Edited on Wed Aug-08-07 01:30 PM by aint_no_life_nowhere
It's not the blast furnace heat of Las Vegas, but the humidity makes it unbearable. I spent two years in Savannah when I was a kid. I remember that when the heat started in the summer, you would start smelling a paper mill that was up river. The sickly sweet smell combined with the heat and humidity made it hell. That was back in the late 1960s. Hopefully, they've done something about that paper mill by now.

We only seem to get the stink when the wind blows from the north. Unfortunately they haven't figured out that one can make paper without the stink. I used to live around a California pulp mill and they figured out how to do it.

113. Yep...
the temp drops down to a bone chilling 80.

You can tell the native Arizonian...
you use pot holders and oven mitts to drive your car.
you have an extensive collection of kitchen towels in your car.
every car you've ever owned was light coloured.
you carpet your dashboards.
you can't find a parking place at the grocery store at 12 midnight.
you think nothing of wearing shorts to a meeting.
you know what a swamp cooler and a chimera are.
you string Christmas lights on your cactus trees
you think driving should be banned from Oct-Mar. by anyone over the age of 65

Did I cover most of them?
